COLUMBUS, Ohio - The IU men's soccer team won its 11th Big Ten tournament title by defeating Ohio State 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Brian Ackley scored the lone goal for the No. 10 Hoosiers on a header with seven minutes remaining in the first half. A free-kick from senior midfielder Josh Tudela hit the cross bar from 25 yards. With the Ohio State goalkeeper out of position, Ackley headed the rebound into an empty net.
The two teams played an even first half, but the in the second half, the Buckeyes had the majority of the offensive opportunities.
Two Hoosier starting defenders, juniors Greg Stevning and Charley Traylor, left the game with injuries.
In the final 10 minutes, the Buckeyes pushed forward to get the tying goal. The best chance came with six minutes remaining when Buckeye forward Eric Edwards had only IU goalkeeper Chay Cain to beat. Edwards shot the ball low and hard toward the near post, but Cain pushed the ball wide for a corner.
