Women's team plays better in pairs

With the women's tennis team heading toward the end of regular season play, it is hard not to see the biggest strength of the team. In fact, you would be seeing double. IU's doubles play has become the backbone of the squad. The three doubles combinations have come on strong, winning the last 11 points, the last loss coming March 11 against Illinois.

'Asian Invasion' takes baseball by storm

Dominating defense, flawless pitching and clutch hitting. For most of its season, the softball squad has wondered where these have been. IU (15-32) found them Tuesday at the IU Softball Field, in its first series sweep of the season in a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) 1-0, 3-2.

A winless weekend on the road ensured the softball team will not meet its goal of reaching the Big Ten tournament. The last-place Hoosiers dropped two games to Northwestern (17-18, 6-7 Big Ten) on Friday, 4-2, 5-1.

Team cruises to 52-point win

Before this weekend, women's track and field coach Randy Heisler said it would be rough for his team to win because the Hoosiers would be competing against Eastern Michigan and Illinois and because those two teams wouldn't steal points from each other.

Taking nothing away from the drama and excitement of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, the NBA playoffs are the best postseason in sports. But the sports world -- the combination of everything going on at one time -- makes right now better than any other time of year.

Hoosiers fall again in weekend series

After losing two of three games to Eastern Kentucky this weekend at Sembower Field, the baseball team has lost every weekend series in the 2001 season. The Hoosiers began the three-game set with a doubleheader Saturday against the Colonels. In the first seven-inning game on the day, the Hoosiers hit two home runs -- one of which was a grand slam -- but came up three runs short, losing 9-6.

New rider enjoys first race

IU wraps up regular season with 2 Big Ten victories

The women's tennis team finished its regular season with two Big Ten victories this weekend, dismantling Michigan 6-1 and Michigan State 5-2. The Hoosiers' (16-8, 7-3 Big Ten) triumphs were career wins 602 and 603 for head coach Lin Loring, who was already the winningest women's coach in Division I history.

Crash crushes Delta Chi

About 20 minutes before Saturday's men's Little 500 race began, Delta Chi rider Jason Sonneborn plopped to his back, sprawled out in the infield grass at Bill Armstrong Stadium and look skyward, preparing for his final Little 500. "If we don't win, it'll be a disappointment," said Sonneborn, a senior.

Polesitters sputter to 13th-place finish

The headache started on Turn 2 of the 10th lap. It never ended. Phi Gamma Delta, besieged with mechanical malfunctions and messy crashes sputtered through the 200-lap men's Little 500 race, finishing in 13th place, its worst showing since 1993. "It was a long day," senior and rider Todd Cornelius said. "But it's just a bike race."

Phi Delta Theta claims third Little 500

Phi Delta Theta avoided wrecks and battled a surprising late-race charge by Teter to claim the 51st Men\'s Little 500 Saturday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Phi Delta Theta took the lead from Teter on lap 190. Teter, which controlled the race from laps 162-190, finished second followed by Sigma Phi Epsilon. Teter and Sigma Phi Epsilon were the only two teams to finish on the lead lap with Phi Delta Theta. Phi Delta won the race with a time of 2:16:57. Junior Matt Marketti was on the bike for Phi Delta Theta when it crossed the finish line. Senior Josh Beatty rode the most laps for the team.

Senior diver makes final cut

IU diver Tom Davidson advanced to Saturday's three-meter springboard finals at the U.S. Diving National Championships. Davidson racked up 553.74 points in Wednesday's first round in Midland, Texas. Davidson, a senior, qualified fourth, 80 points behind leader Troy Dumais of Texas. Dumais claimed last season's national title.

IU squeezes by Butler with 2 late goals

It took two late goals for IU to beat its in-state rival Butler 2-1 Wednesday night in a spring soccer match at North Central High School in Indianapolis. Junior Ryan Mack scored both goals in the win.
