Coverdale cited for illegal consumption

·

Riding an emotional high after IU easily defeated Southern Illinois 85-63 Dec. 2, sophomore Tom Coverdale was cited for illegal consumption by Indiana State Police, his second alcohol offense of the year. Coverdale, 20, said he was embarrassed about the incident.

Hoosiers sweep Indiana Classic

·

Kyle Hornsby's teammates consider him the best shooter on IU's basketball team. In two games of the Indiana Classic, Hornsby proved that he truly is one of IU's best bombers.

Connecticut wins 2nd NCAA title

·

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After Connecticut defender Chris Gbandi scored his game-winning goal in Sunday's final, he sprinted to the sidelines of Ericsson Stadium and pulled his white jersey over his face to display a white undershirt with a Superman logo.

Game a battle between underdogs

·

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Don't tell Creighton that five-time national champion IU is an underdog. And don't try to convince the Hoosiers that the Bluejays, who outscored IU 6-2 this season, are the sleeper team of the NCAA tournament.

Yeagley builds IU tradition

·

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- All Jerry Yeagley wanted was a shot at varsity status. That was his final four in 1973 -- turning IU soccer into a varsity sport. He never thought that 28 years later he'd have the second highest career collegiate coaching victories, or that his teams would have competed in exactly half of the final four tournaments they had a chance to make. But Yeagley's teams have been that successful.

End of the streak

·

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Senior forward Matt Fundenberger dyed his hair blond for good luck before the men's soccer team left for Ericsson Stadium Wednesday. When he highlighted his locks in 1998 and '99, the Hoosiers won national titles.

A familiar situation

·

If IU wins the national championship this weekend with its current record of 16-6, it would be the first team to win the title with more than five losses. Only Duke (18-5-1) in 1986 and Clemson (18-5-1) in 1987 had worse records and won the NCAA championship.

Versatile transfer player sparks Hoosier offense

·

Bobby de St. Aubin remembers last season's NCAA men's soccer College Cup. He and his teammates got together and watched the games on television. De St. Aubin saw IU beat UCLA 3-2 and Santa Clara 1-0 for its second consecutive national championship -- the Hoosiers' fifth title overall.

Hoosiers come home for Classic

Hoosiers upset No. 10 Irish

·

SOUTH BEND -- As IU's point guard, sophomore Tom Coverdale's job is running the Hoosiers' offense. Against Notre Dame Tuesday night, he was IU's offense. Coverdale topped his previous career high of 13 by halftime on the way to a 30-point performance in IU's 86-78 upset win against No. 10 Notre Dame. At times, the only way to stop Coverdale was to grab his jersey, as Notre Dame's Troy Murphy did late in the second half to prevent an easy basket. "I had no idea Tom Coverdale would score 30 points," interim head coach Mike Davis said. "Coverdale stepped his play up in the first half and hit a three pointer that gave us momentum going into halftime."

Defense slows Murphy

·

SOUTH BEND -- Junior Notre Dame forward Troy Murphy is no secret. It's hard to hide a 6-foot-11 player who averages 26.8 points and nine rebounds per game, and the Hoosiers (4-3) knew their defense would be crucial against the No. 10-ranked Irish (4-1).

Midfielder provides versatility, strength to team

·

In the final 27 minutes of the IU-North Carolina men's soccer game Saturday, the Tar Heels sent practically their entire team at the Hoosiers' goal in an attempt to tie the game. At one point, junior goalkeeper Colin Rogers moved toward the far post, exposing an open net when North Carolina had the ball. At that moment, junior midfielder Tyler Hawley sprinted to the near post just in time to clear a ball that landed centimeters from the goal line.

Hoosiers seek to avenge earlier loss to Creighton

·

John Swann has proven himself this season. The sophomore marking back has repeatedly marked the opponent's most dangerous attacker, and, for the most part, he's been successful in shutting his man down. Swann didn't let UCLA's McKinley Tennyson Jr. or Portland's Olympian Conor Casey do much against the Hoosiers. And just this past weekend, he kept North Carolina's Chris Carrieri, the nation's leading scorer, from scoring a goal.

Around the Game
