City councilmember Sydney Zulich announces run for Bloomington mayor

Bloomington city councilmember Sydney Zulich announced her campaign to run for mayor of Bloomington on Saturday, basing her platform on affordability, city investment and keeping Bloomington business local.

“We’re in a spiral of corporatizing our city and hiring out-of-town consultants to solve our problems,” Zulich said in a Saturday press release. “We need to use our community’s creativity, talent and grit for in-house solutions that keep our dollars in Bloomington.”

As a Council District 6 representative, the majority of Zulich’s constituency includes Indiana University students. After graduating from IU in 2023, Zulich, a Democrat, became the youngest person ever elected to Bloomington City Council at 21 years old.

According to her profile on the city’s website, Zulich focuses on economic and infrastructure projects in her capacity as a councilmember, and is part of the council’s Pedestrian Safety Committee and Budget Task Force, among others.

During recent council sessions, Zulich has opposed Flock cameras in the city, objected to postponing the Hopewell Planned Unit Development for affordable housing and voted against a permanent seasonal closure of Kirkwood Avenue.

Zulich appears poised to challenge incumbent Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson, also a Democrat in the May 2027 mayoral primary. Thomson has served as mayor since Jan. 1, 2024.
