Bass team making a splash

It was a cold and windy weekend in eastern Iowa with water surrounding the boats in Coralville Reservoir and rain dropping steadily from the sky during the sixth annual Big Ten Bass Fishing Classic. On Oct. 13, the rainy weather prevented the Hoosiers from catching any bass long enough to qualify. But on Sunday, as the freezing wind continued, sophomore Brian Metzler was able to reel in a large enough fish. It would prove to be the winner.

Outreach provides fun for all

In an effort to provide the Bloomington area with more opportunities for physical fitness, the Recreational Sports Outreach Programs are working to supply families, disabled students and international students with facilities and accommodations for exercise. "Recreational sports are designed sports for everyone," said Rachel Britton, graduate assistant for Outreach Programs.

Team takes winning streak to 17 games

About a year ago to the day, men's basketball coach Mike Davis sat at a table similar to the one he was at Sunday morning. Of course, then he was the Hoosiers' interim men's basketball coach. Sitting in a large ballroom at the Doubletree Hotel-O'Hare Rosemont just outside of Chicago Sunday for the 2001 Big Ten Basketball Media Day, Davis reflected on how things have changed. Now, he is the Hoosiers coach, without the interim.

Hoosiers struggle, place 9th

Savoy, Ill. -- Head coach Judy Bogenschutz couldn't come up with the words to describe her disappointment. Her team had just placed ninth in the Big Ten Championship, their worst finish since her first year as coach at IU.

Field hockey goes winless in conference

Going into Friday's match against No. 9 Ohio State, the women's field hockey team knew they would get the best the Buckeyes had to offer because with a win the Buckeyes would clinch a tie for the regular season Big Ten championship.

Team splits, but misses tourney

Public address announcer Jeff Smith made the declaration with two minutes remaining in Friday night's women's soccer match. At the time, IU trailed Purdue 1-0. A Northwestern win combined with an IU loss on Friday night would mean the Hoosiers would not advance to the Big Ten tournament, Nov. 8-11 at Purdue.

Team faces Wildcats at home

The hockey team will face the University of Kentucky in a home-and-home series this weekend, beginning at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Frank Southern Center, 1965 S. Henderson St. The second game will be played at midnight Saturday in Kentucky's Lexington Ice Center.

Saturday marks season's end

The women's rowing team will wrap up its fall season Saturday at the Head of the Elk regatta in Elkhart, Ind. The race will take place on the St. Joseph River, a 2.5-mile stretch of numerous bends and curves. The Hoosiers are excited about the coming weekend and look forward to a competitive race. Indiana will face off against the 2001 Big Ten Conference Champions University of Michigan, Purdue, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

Big Tens mean business

This Sunday in Savoy, Ill., the No. 23 Hoosiers will compete in the Big Ten Cross Country Championships at the University of Illinois golf course. Last season, the men's team finished second, and this year's Hoosiers are looking for a similar performance. The Big Ten's strength in distance running will make this a difficult task.

Texas Tech called for cancellation

The decision to cancel the men's basketball game in December of 2002 against former coach Bob Knight and Texas Tech at Assembly Hall was initiated by Texas Tech and was agreed upon by IU administrators, said Jeff Fanter, IU Athletics media relations director. The cancellation was originally announced through a press release Oct. 13.

Facing best of the Midwest

The women's tennis team is competing in the Omni Hotels Regional Championships this weekend at the Neilsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The tournament consists of the best players in the Midwest. The singles champion, singles finalist and champion doubles team from each region will earn an automatic berth into the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November.

Team pleased with progress

Heading into its final weekend of regular season play, the field hockey team is concentrating on its own play and improving for the future. The Hoosiers are 1-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play going into the weekend, but Hoosiers said they have come a long way in their second year as a varsity sport.

Team heads to Region IV

The three seniors on the men's tennis team are looking to lead the Hoosiers this weekend at the annual Region IV Championship hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. Both singles and doubles matches will be played in single elimination tournaments with no consolation brackets. The Championship consists of the top men's players in the Midwest.

Home court should help start season's second half

Confidence and revenge are on the minds of the women's volleyball team this weekend as they enter the second round of Big Ten play, hosting Iowa and Minnesota. IU has home court advantage after visiting both teams earlier in the month and is looking to continue its newfound winning ways after beating long time rival Purdue last weekend.

Must win for Big Ten berth

The women's soccer team is in the midst of a four-game losing streak, including losing two pivotal games last weekend at home. All the negative feelings from the losses can be erased with a victory at 7 p.m. tonight against Purdue at Bill Armstrong Stadium. A win would give the Hoosiers (6-6-1, 3-5-1) a berth in the Big Ten tournament, which would be a great accomplishment after going 1-8-1 in the conference last season.
