Leach hopes to be leader

Last season at the Big Ten championship, sophomore Matt Leach wrote himself into the IU record books as he recorded a fifth-best all time school record in the 100-yard backstroke. Now, in the midst of another season and with Big Tens approaching in February, Leach is hoping he'll be able to take over first place. "It'll be really hard but I think I can do it," Leach said. "I'm a lot faster this year and I think I can take even more time off from my previous Big Ten swim from last year. I just keep taking baby steps, that is what it's all about. I think I can be a big impact swimmer at Big Tens." At the Big Tens last year, Leach finished behind then senior backstroker Will Bernhardt in both the 100- and 200- yard events. This year, head coach Kris Kirchner expects Leach to lead the way in the events.

The men's swimming and diving teams returned from Iowa City Saturday with both a win and a loss. The Hoosiers finished with a 169-130 victory over the Hawkeyes but lost 202-98 to the Gophers.

Hoosiers take loss as chance to learn

The IU men's tennis team (2-1) lost its first road match of the spring season to Louisville (3-0) 5-2 Thursday. The Hoosiers accomplished what they wanted to but didn't get the results they expected. They won the doubles point, yet failed to claim the singles points. Senior Rahman Smiley (9-5) claimed the only IU singles victory out of six opportunities. He defeated the Cardinals' Alex Sivertsen 6-2, 7-5.

Making weight key for wrestlers

Room to improve for women's tennis

The men\'s swimming and diving squads travel to Iowa City, Iowa, tomorrow to take on Big Ten foes Iowa (1-2) and Minnesota (2-0). The Golden Gophers, ranked sixth in the nation and the reigning Big Ten champions, could be the Hoosiers' toughest competition. "I think we really need to get up to swim Minnesota because we'll swim them in Big Tens and they're the powerhouse," sophomore Matt Leach said. "They're the ones that won it last year and we're looking to take as many races as we can from them."

Purdue, Iowa trying to pick up steam

Steve Alford isn't big on Christmas break. At least not after Iowa stumbled to four losses in five Big Ten games after returning to Iowa City. The Hawkeyes escaped with a 75-71 victory against Michigan State Tuesday and might have found some breathing room. They head to Purdue at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in search of their first back-to-back wins since early this month.

Wisconsin: overrated

The women's basketball team proved Thursday night that defense truly wins games. By halftime, the Hoosiers had smothered the Wisconsin Badgers enough to earn a 36-29 lead, while forcing 10 turnovers.

Illini ready for Hoosiers

Before this week, Bill Self had a problem. The second-year Illinois coach didn't have enough healthy players to play five-on-five. The Fighting Illini were the walking wounded. Some of them could barely walk. Now, three weeks into the Big Ten season, Self has a full cast of characters -- "enough to play four-on-four on both ends of the court," he joked earlier this week.

IU prepared for No. 9 Illini

The Hoosiers have been looking forward to this one. And the anticipation began long before today. Their eagerness showed when Mike Davis spoke earlier this week about not looking past Penn State. To win a third conference road game before coming home for five of it's next six games would be big for IU. At the same time, Davis admitted his team was looking forward to Saturday's 1 p.m. showdown with No. 9 Illinois at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers look at this as their chance to prove themselves.

Fedoriw dominates the books and competition

One big reason for the IU men's track and field team's early success is the talented team members. Senior Wasyl Fedoriw is one of these talented athletes, not only in the shot put and the weight throw, but in the classroom, as well. This year, Fedoriw came back to the track and field team for his final year of eligibility. He got accepted to medical school last year but decided to wait until next year to enter.

Men look to improve standings

After a successful weekend at Purdue, the men's club volleyball team is preparing to carry its confidence into the upcoming Michigan Classic at the University of Michigan Jan. 26 and 27. The Hoosiers began their Big Ten season Sunday, competing in the first of two Big Ten qualifiers. The next qualifier will be played at Iowa Feb. 16. The results of overall play through the two qualifiers determine the seeds for the Big Ten tournament March 22 and 23 at Northwestern. Facing Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Iowa didn't seem to faze the Hoosiers as they returned to Bloomington undefeated (4-0) and looking forward to the next series of matches.
