Team chops down Sycamores

·

The women's soccer team had a tough 0-1 loss Friday afternoon at Purdue, but came through with a solid 2-1 win over Indiana State in the first meeting ever between the two teams. In Terre Haute, the Sycamores struck first against the Hoosiers on a goal by sophomore forward Claire Hemkens. Junior goalkeeper Shaunna Daugherty said IU came out flat and didn't match the intensity of the scrappy opposition. "We definitely didn't play well at all." Daugherty said. "The second half was a lot better than the first. We should have won by a lot more."

Hawkeyes, Billikens in town for IU's final home-stand

·

The field hockey team will grace the turf at John Mellencamp Pavilion for the final time this season as they conclude their four game home-stand with weekend match-ups against the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Billikens. The Hoosiers are coming off a .500 weekend, in which they were shut-out by No. 2 Michigan 5-0. But they rallied back and showed signs of offensive life, out-shooting Div. III Lindenwood 32-2 and defeating them 3-0.

Team looks for victories on West Coast

·

West Coast road trips have not been kind to the IU men's soccer team in recent years. The Hoosiers have taken five road trips west since 1994 and they have compiled just a 5-5 record while their overall record during that span was 153-28-6.

Freshman duo on course to make big impact

·

There are only two freshman on the men's tennis team this year but both are expected to be key contributors to the success of the team. Neither John Stone nor Viktor Libal has had too much trouble with the transition from high school to college.

IU ready for first test

·

The last time the IU men's swimming and diving team met the Michigan State Spartans in regular dual meet season was Jan. 30, 2000 at Michigan State. The Hoosiers lost 148 to 95. At 5 p.m. today at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center, the Hoosiers will look to avenge that loss and win their conference opener.

Thankless positions making an impact

·

All guts, no glory. That's the kind of play liberos and setters have to put together for every match. The proverbial point guard of volleyball, a setter simply puts the ball where the hitters want it, and watch them crush the balls down to the cheers of the crowd. Without the glory of scoring points, save the occasional trick play, a setter lives a relatively boring offensive life.

Volleyball team back on a roll

·

The Hoosier volleyball team is on a roll again. The squad has risen from a four game losing streak to begin anew with three straight wins. IU is now looking to extend this streak with two home matches this weekend against Iowa and Minnesota Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Hoosiers set to spoil Champaign Homecoming

·

Last year, Illinois spoiled IU's Homecoming with a 35-14 win en route to the Big Ten Championship and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. This year, the Hoosiers are obliged to try and return the favor as Illinois takes them on for its Homecoming in Champaign, Ill.

Giants grab 3-2 lead with convincing win

·

SAN FRANCISCO -- Teased and taunted for tiptoeing around Barry Bonds, the Anaheim Angels decided to challenge him. Whack! Bonds lined an RBI double that sent the San Francisco Giants zooming to a big lead that not even these pesky Angels could overcome, winning 16-4 in Game 5 Thursday night to take a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

Laid-back approach working

·

There are two philosophies to coaching. A coaching staff can be stern disciplinarians, barking instructions from the sideline. Or, they can be laid back and teach through hands-on examples, a laid-back attitude and humor. Credit coach Mick Lyon and his staff with the latter.

Kickers slowly earning respect

·

Last year, IU's kicking game was brutal with the place kickers and punters having little success. Junior punter Ryan Hamre and sophomore place kicker Bryan Robertson came into this season knowing they would face some pressure since both were coming off sub-standard seasons, they said. And with a new coaching staff in place, neither were certain what this season would bring. Hamre struggled his sophomore season after having a decent freshman year. He averaged only 31.3 yards per punt. Hamre said it all had to do with technique. He credits coach Brian McNeely with his improvement. "It was mostly my drop and my leg swing," Hamre said. "Coach McNeely has really helped a lot. He's gotten my technique to where it is now. He scrutinizes it a lot, and he pretty much tell me when I do something wrong." Hamre said he had a lack of confidence last year. So far this season, Hamre has an average of 38.3 yards a punt. The addition of McNeely has helped in that regard as well.

Woods' job is not to make social adjustments

·

Tiger Woods has found himself a nice mess. Well, actually, the nice mess found Tiger. The world's most popular golfer is caught in the middle of a social controversy, even though he has nothing to do with it. Augusta National Golf Course is a private club in Augusta, Ga. Like most other private courses in the U.S., it can choose its members based on whatever criteria its directors decide. Unlike most other private courses, though, it is the home of the most prestigious event in the world's biggest professional golf tour.

New recruit contributing in early season

·

In late June, instead of preparing for the upcoming cross country season, freshman Stephen Haas ran in the World Junior Trials for track. Because of that, Haas had a late start entering the cross country season. Going into his season, he was about four or five weeks behind his teammates. So far this cross country season, the highest Haas has placed on the team was seventh last Saturday at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute. But, coach Robert Chapman said he thinks Haas will help the team tremendously in the second half of the season.

Rookie tackling the turf, adjusting to new situation

·

Adjustments to a new team and new region can be tough for some players. But for freshman forward Nikki Orciuch the adjustment from New England high school ball to Big Ten field hockey has been taken in stride with only a few bumps in the road. Orciuch leads Hoosier freshmen and is third on the team with three goals and seven points while recording 15 shots on goal. While Orciuch has made the transition well, that doesn't mean that she hasn't had to work for it. IU has played one of the toughest schedules in the country this year by competing against six of the Top 20 teams including Top 10 teams Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State. Orciuch said the competition chang has been a big one.
