To the Editor:
There is much controversy surrounding AI and the data centers that train them. Such technology is already changing our economy by making certain jobs obsolete and making information searches easier. There are some firms or artists that openly brag about not using AI, but this seems like a gimmick more than anything else. After all, with most larger firms trying to use it, those that don’t won’t be updated with the newest technology and will become increasingly outdated. In short, AI is here, and it isn’t going away.
However, simply saying, “AI is the way of the future and everyone needs to deal with it,” ignores the actual issues we’ll need to address with its creation. After all, data centers require resources that have to be taken from something else. Also, people spend too much time online these days anyway, so AI has the potential to further drag people away from the real world. Our communities need to come with answers on how to deal with the coming change new technology brings with it. The question isn’t: “Should or shouldn’t we use AI?” but: “AI is here, so what is our reaction to it?”
