Men send two to NCAA Indoor Championships

The track and field indoor season concludes this weekend with the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. The Hoosiers were able to qualify two individuals. Sophomore Aarik Wilson qualified in both the long and triple jump and sophomore John Jefferson made the field in the mile.

Coach could gain four titles at Arkansas this weekend

This weekend, the IU track and field team will send three of its top athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., in hopes of bringing home titles in four events. Senior Rachelle Boone is competing in the 60- and 200-meter dashes, senior Danielle Carruthers is entered in the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles, and senior Rose Richmond is competing in the long jump.

IU gets back to the basics

Team ready for Florida tourney

First year coaches face off in weekend doubleheader

Rematch a chance for redemption

IU basketball fans are most likely looking forward to the upcoming spring break -- some time to relax and rest their weak hearts after a season so up and down it could be a new ride at Six Flags. A couple of weeks ago, the Hoosiers' tournament hopes were on life support. They limped back into Assembly Hall after losing two of three games on the road (including a 26-point rout at the hand of Illinois) with a 6-7 conference record. But a two-game home-stand quickly mended their losing ways as they beat Iowa and Minnesota to go one game above .500 in the conference. They were finally off the dreaded bubble -- their tickets to the NCAA tournament all but punched.

Sophomore learns from summer play

During her freshman year as a Hoosier water polo team member, sophomore Krista Peterson was effective for the Hoosiers. She was the third leading scorer on the team with 50 goals and led the team in assists with 30. Although her freshmen year was impressive, Peterson said she has improved this year largely due to her participation on the Junior National Water Polo team this summer. "Her summer with Junior Nationals really helped her on the defensive end," Coach Barry King said. "The biggest improvement I see in her is on the defensive end where she has made really big strides."

Distance runner makes NCAAs

Tuesday, the NCAA released the roster for those who will compete at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., next weekend. Sophomore John Jefferson was waiting for the list to let him know if he will attend the meet as a participant. Jefferson was sitting at 25th in the mile and needed to be among the top 15 to qualify for the meet. "I didn't want to be waiting around for the list to come out, so instead I went out and studied and had (sophomore Stephen) Haas call me to let me know," Jefferson said. "Earlier coach had told me I was pretty much in and we had a pretty good idea that I was."

Win worth waiting for

The successful baseball formula of quality pitching and timely hitting added up to a 4-1 IU victory over Butler on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers' (7-1) bats started slowly, but three timely extra base hits combined with solid pitching provided the winning margin for Coach Bob Morgan's club. After two cancellations, IU was finally able to open its home season. And Morgan said he was happy with what he saw.

Divers to compete for NCAA marks

In the history of IU diving, nine Olympians have competed and teams have won six NCAA titles. This weekend, the cream and crimson divers begin their quest for a seventh title. Tomorrow is the first step toward competing at the NCAA Championships, as the NCAA Regionals competition begins.

Three earn conference honors

Three IU men's basketball players received recognition Tuesday as All-Big Ten awards were handed out. Seniors Jeff Newton and Tom Coverdale, and freshman Bracey Wright were named to the All-Big Ten teams by both the media and the coaches.

Streaking IU plays Butler in home opener

The Hoosier baseball squad heads back to the diamond today in an interstate match-up with Butler. It will be the first time this season IU will play in Bloomington at Sembower Field. Last week's game against Xavier was canceled and the team is still trying to reschedule its first home game with DePauw which was postponed on Feb. 25 due to snow.

Team's home opener canceled

After opening the season with 14 straight road games, the Hoosiers' softball team (6-8) was scheduled to return to Bloomington today for a doubleheader and the home opener against the Illinois State Redbirds (7-10). But because of unplayable field conditions, the home opener will take place Saturday against Eastern Michigan. The two games are scheduled to begin Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.

Dissatisfied Knight declines $250,000 salary

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Bob Knight told Texas Tech he wouldn't accept his $250,000 coaching salary this year because his team failed to live up to his expectations -- and so did he. "He has standards," Texas Tech men's basketball spokesman Randy Farley said Monday. "He just didn't meet his standards, and so he said, 'I don't think I should be paid for that.'" Tech (16-10, 6-10 Big 12) is the No. 7 seed in the Big 12 conference tournament in Dallas and plays Baylor on Thursday night.

Georgia's Harrick suspended with pay

Athens, Ga. -- Georgia suspended coach Jim Harrick with pay and withdrew from the SEC and NCAA tournaments Monday after an internal investigation showed three players took a phony class taught by his son. Harrick's future is unclear while the school and NCAA look into allegations brought two weeks ago by a former player.

Hoosiers dominate tournament despite one loss

Going into this weekend's tournament the IU women's water polo team knew that out of the five team field Michigan would be their only competition. Coach Barry King said that the focus of the weekend would be the Wolverines and that the Hoosiers had a great chance to beat them this time. King was right. They had a chance to beat Michigan and no other teams gave them any competition. The Hoosiers had a great chance to beat the Wolverines as they started the game off strong. The score was tied after the first period, but in the second period the Hoosiers scored four unanswered goals to lead at halftime 5-1.

Brothers coach each other on mats

The Cooper brothers, junior Coyte and freshman Matt, represent the present and the future of IU wrestling at the same time. Coyte has been a leader for the Hoosiers all season and has written his name in the IU record books. Matt is part of a group of Hoosier underclassmen that coach Duane Goldman has been praising all season and is one of only two true freshmen to regularly start for the Hoosiers.

MJ loses in final Garden game

NEW YORK -- Even though he didn't beat them, Michael Jordan proved he can still rattle the New York Knicks. Jordan finished one point shy of 40 in what was likely his final game at Madison Square Garden as New York blew all but one point of a late 15-point lead and came away with a 97-96 victory Sunday.
