Roby's streak of bad luck continues

In IU's 33-3 win against Indiana State, junior wideout Courtney Roby had a long touchdown pass called back by a penalty. After the game, he said he'd have more opportunities. That's just what he got Saturday against Kentucky, but with the same results.\nIn the second quarter, Roby took a reverse, dodged a pair of colliding Wildcats and sped into the end zone for what seemed to be a 58-yard score. But a holding call brought it back and took away a second, long touchdown in as many weeks for the wideout.\n"It's two in a row," Roby said. "I've just got to keep plugging away. That's all I can do, just keep plugging. I'll get my opportunities."\nHe may not get any opportunities this weekend, however. In the third quarter of the Kentucky game, Roby took a shoulder to the side of the knee and left the game. Coach Gerry DiNardo said he may not play at Michigan.\n"I don't know if he'll practice," he said. "If he practices, he has a great shot of making it (to play Saturday). If he doesn't practice today, I say he has a 50-50 shot. If he practices Wednesday, he'll play. I wouldn't be surprised if he did or did not play."

Lorenzen questions call\nSenior Wildcat quarterback Jared Lorenzen was among those baffled by DiNardo's decision to decline a pass interference penalty on a third-down, third-quarter play at the 1-yard line Saturday. Rather than having a third and goal at the 16-yard line, DiNardo opted for a fourth and goal at the one. Lorenzen barreled into the end zone on the very next play. \n"I was a little surprised they declined it actually," Lorenzen said. "That's a gamble they chose to take, they probably thought we were just going to kick a field goal. Luckily, we got a touchdown out of it."

Special teams show\nAlthough the offense and defense struggled Saturday, IU's special teams put on a strong performance. Freshman punter Tyson Beattie punted the ball inside the 15-yard line four times in the first half, and cornerback Leonard Bryant leveled Wildcat return man Derek Abney twice in the second half for no return.\nBryant said he was pleased with his special teams performance, but needs to be careful of getting a penalty. \n"I've got to watch it though, I almost got a penalty," he said. "I saw the ref and he had his hand on his flag like he was John Wayne trying to shoot me. But that's what we need. We need playmakers. I've got to take that enthusiasm and effort and put it at cornerback and pick some balls off."\nOffensively, junior quarterback Matt LoVecchio said the team hopes to improve on an offense that went three and out in three third quarter opportunities. \n"We had three opportunities inside their 50 to get points and we didn't do that," he said. "We have to continue to improve and take advantage of the opportunities our defense and special teams give us."\nOn defense, junior linebacker Josh Moore said the team is getting better every game.\n"We've got to play 60 minutes of ball. We've got a lot of inexperienced guys and that's a factor. But each week they're improving and getting better."\n-- Contact staff writers Gavin Lesnick at glesnick@indiana.edu and John Rodgers at jprodger@indiana.edu
