TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Florida judge rejected Al Gore's quest to overturn George W. Bush's certified statewide victory Monday, turning away what some Democrats have said was Gore's best hope to become president.Circuit Judge N. Sanders Sauls, in refusing the vice president's historic election contest, rejected Gore's request for a manual recount of thousands of contested ballots in Florida's presidential election.

The Big Ten named 13 members of the IU women's soccer team with the honors of Academic All-Conference. The Hoosiers have the third most conference selections behind Iowa (16) and Penn State (15).

Team gets 4th in tourney

Sophomore Megan Geers won the 200-yard breaststroke and freshman Sarah Fiden took first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle for the women's swimming team Sunday in at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. Fiden defeated her nearest competitor by almost 13 seconds with a time of 16:49.62.

XFL chose wrong sport

Football's faithful have a new reason to be excited this year, as the ever-exciting NFL Pro Bowl does not mark the last game until September. The newly formed XFL, which is owned by Vince McMahon of WWF fame, will begin in February and last into the spring. But while many are anxious to see the XFL's quirky elements, such as no fair catches, the league's biggest problem is its competition.

Center for Bio-Ethical Reform seeks settlement

The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform plans to file a motion with the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis to request a settlement conference to come to a compromise in a civil rights lawsuit the center filed against IU earlier this year.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Eddie Robinson said he took his eyes off Ryan Mack for two seconds Saturday at North Carolina's Fetzer Field. For two seconds, Robinson watched the ball instead of his man. Because of that brief moment, the Tar Heels can only watch the NCAA men's soccer College Cup this weekend. Mack, a junior midfielder, received a ball from senior midfielder Justin Tauber and turned on Robinson in those two seconds, finding himself a half step ahead of the Tar Heel midfielder with nothing in front of him. Then, with 31:08 remaining in the quarterfinal game, Mack sent a shot to the upper near corner and past North Carolina goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey. IU hung on to win 1-0. The victory, IU's third in three tournament road games thus far, sends the Hoosiers to their fourth consecutive final four.

'New Economy' faces market challenges

The heralded "New Economy" -- supposedly cured from traditional booms and busts of the past -- appears to be facing a speed bump. Economic indicators are pointing more toward a hard landing, meaning a recession. A recession occurs when the real Gross Domestic Product (subtracting inflation) is negative for two consecutive quarters, which hasn't happened in the United States since 1990-91.

You know what? Dorothy was right… there really is no place like home. After traveling more than 10,000 miles during the first three rounds of the NCAA tournament, the men's soccer team finally caught a break.

Detroit man pleads guilty in shooting

In exchange for the dismissal of a murder charge, Gregory K. Cox pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder Thursday.
