A time of transition

·

Sept. 11: In the most devastating attack on U.S. soil to date, terrorists toppled two of the World Trade Center's five towers in the heart of downtown Manhattan; caused substantial damage on the Pentagon in Washington; and took down a plane in Pennsylvania.

Looking back at 4 months

·

It's hard to believe how fast the semester went by. The humid August days when we first returned to the newsroom seem like only yesterday, but many things have changed. My staff and I lived and worked through one of our nation's darkest days.

No respect at home is 'funny'

·

When someone comes in favored to win at your gym, it is an insult," point guard Donald Perry said after his team's 74-61 bouncing of No. 15 Ball State. I agree. The basketball team has given their student fans a clear conscience heading into this week's final examinations, and it has put a smile on the face of the die-hard alumni as the holidays approach. Furthermore, IU clearly has momentum for the upcoming contest against Miami and the showdown with highly ranked Kentucky Dec. 22 in Indianapolis.

Team's depth gives Hoosiers playing time

·

Coach Mike Davis isn't kidding when he says he has options when it comes to whom he can play. And he isn't afraid to use that bench. All eight Hoosiers who got into the game Saturday played at least 15 minutes. That balance in playing time has led to more contributions from different players. While sophomore Jared Jeffries led the way Saturday with 22 points and junior guard Tom Coverdale had 19, every player had at least three.

Students undertake online businesses

·

Freshman Brian Urbanski and graduate student Mike Zabel have jumped onto the Internet bandwagon and are taking advantage of some opportunities available in the 21st century. Urbanski and Zabel are both full time students who create, maintain and sometimes -- if they're lucky -- profit from their own Web sites.

Oakman won't run for 2nd term

·

IU Student Association President Jake Oakman has announced that he will not run for reelection. Earlier in the semester the senior expressed interest in running again, but said he still needed time to consider it.

Afghanistan recieves relief from Uzbeks

·

HAIRATON, Afghanistan -- A train rumbled across the only bridge from Uzbekistan into Afghanistan for the first time in four years Sunday, carrying humanitarian aid for refugees battling winter cold, disease and hunger.

The new McCarthy era

·

Attorney General John Ashcroft has given voice to an executive plan to fight terrorism in the United States and in Afghanistan. The plan shall effectively limit certain American civil liberties, while conspicuously leaving others alone. One civil liberty the Republican Administration's plan shall infringe upon is the FBI's auditing of gun purchasing records by those they detained for questioning in the Sept. 11 attacks, according to the New York Times.

Wrestlers open dual season against Missouri

·

The No.18 Hoosiers head to the University of Missouri Friday night to take on the No. 16 Tigers. It will be the first dual meet of the season for IU, while Missouri defeated No.14 Illinois in its first dual meet. The Hoosiers experienced success against Missouri in the past, winning the last eight matches. But the Tigers are having an up year and the contest should be a battle.

Hoosiers need stronger overall effort

·

Nice win Tuesday guys -- I guess. The Hoosiers win against a Notre Dame team that entered Assembly Hall with a perfect 7-0 record was gratifying, kind of. The Irish had three players score 17 or more points, and freshman guard Chris Thomas led the team with 24. But the Hoosiers won, and that's what matters. I suppose.

Hoosiers enter Pac-10/Big Ten challenge

·

Women's basketball's Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge hardly reflects the men's Big Ten/ACC challenge. But nevertheless the female version brings together four opponents from two of the sport's most competitive conferences. IU, Washington, Washington State and No. 16 Michigan face off Friday and Sunday in Seattle. No other Big Ten and Pac-10 women's teams will meet this weekend -- a far cry from the nine highly promoted games in the men's Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

After further review...NFL referees stink

·

The NFL finally compromised with the officials after week one this season. The referees were on strike, and the league used "replacement refs" until the issue was settled. Now, it looks like the NFL would have been better off with the backups. Referees this season have been constantly confused and repeatedly criticized on the spot by television analysts.

Sting nets 10 drug charges

·

Early Thursday, IU police arrested nine students and one IU employee for drug-related charges. The arrests stemmed from a 3-month investigation by a federally-funded task force. The task force is sponsored by the Monroe County prosecutor's office.

Hoosiers look to extend winning streak

·

Last year, a last-second three-pointer lifted the Hoosiers over eventual Pac-10 champion Washington at Assembly Hall. Tonight, IU looks to remain undefeated against the Huskies on their turf.

For those who served

·

Sixty years ago today, George Cotton was literally at ground zero when the bombs started to fly on Pearl Harbor. "I was on the USS Detroit; we got lucky," Cotton said. "They shot torpedoes at us and strafed us, but we came out in one piece."

Cardinals might be only ones not surprised by their team's success

·

During Thanksgiving, people were talking about Ball State. And it wasn\'t because David Letterman attended the university. By the end of the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Nov. 21, the Cardinals had squeaked past then-No.3 Kansas and blown out No.4 UCLA before losing to No.1 Duke in the tournament\'s championship game. All of this in the first three games of their season.

Point guard dual turns into point guard duo

·

Donald Perry is learning how to become a solid point guard. Tom Coverdale is learning how not to sit the bench. Coach Mike Davis' no-nonsense approach -- either produce on the floor or make friends with the bench -- is working. The two-man point guard system, which caught many off-guard and blends the talents of a freshman and a junior, has included healthy point production and demanding repercussions.
