Sting nets 10 drug charges

Early Thursday, IU police arrested nine students and one IU employee for drug-related charges. The arrests stemmed from a 3-month investigation by a federally-funded task force. The task force is sponsored by the Monroe County prosecutor's office. \nThe arrests were led by IU Police Department Officer Dave Hannum who was assisted by a team of about 30 officers. \nCharges against the students included dealing marijuana, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of marijuana, cocaine-related offenses and dealing in a controlled substance, according to the police report. \nThe force divided into teams of four to five officers and left IUPD headquarters at about 1:30 a.m., Hannum said. The arrests were well-organized, as each team was assigned a specific location and suspect, serving warrants nearly simultaneously, Hannum said. \nThe investigation's main focus, Hannum said, lies in reprimanding individuals suspected of distributing illegal substances.\n"We're not after people who smoke dope," Hannum said. "We're after people who are dealing."\nFor a complete story, see Monday's IDS.
