Hoosiers hope to pick on hapless Wildcats

·

Northwestern, by all accounts, is a desperate team. The Wildcats have lost their last eight dual meets and are winless in conference action. In the team's last meet, they suffered a blowout loss against Minnesota losing 41-3, and the Wildcats cannot claim any ranked starters. One would probably think when IU and Northwestern square off at 7 p.m. tonight at the University Gym, that the smart money is on IU to end its conference losing streak.

A Soundtrack to our loves

·

Before Lionel Richie said "Hello," before Sade sang "Sweetest Taboo," and before Common saw "The Light," there was Emily Dickinson. Lovers used to call on poets to express their true feelings. Now they call on pop. Using their own collection and a CD burner, smitten romantics can take their most intimate songs and turn them into one perfect Valentine's Day mix CD. The mixes are cheap, easy and very personal. With file-sharing programs like Kazaa, finding that perfect song to sum up your feelings is even easier.

Tourney gives IU a chance at revenge

The victory moved Oakland ahead of Michigan for sole possession of first place. Michigan held on to second place and, along with Oakland, received a bye in the first round of the six-team GMHL tournament.

Attorney General eyes gas prices

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- The state is urging consumers to report suspicions of gasoline price gouging as the prospect of war in Iraq drives up prices. Attorney General Steve Carter encouraged the public to report suspected gouging at retail stations via his office's Web site, or by calling a toll-free telephone hot line set up for that purpose at (866) 241-9753. The Web address is www.in.gov/attorney general. "With the possibility of war looming, the market is responding, which results in price increases for some commodities including crude oil and gasoline," Carter said Wednesday. "Price increases are likely in these uncertain times, but I am watchful for excessive levels that could lead to a repeat of events following Sept. 11." Carter said his office had no indication of any gasoline shortage that would cause prices to rise. Wednesday's average Indiana price for unleaded gasoline was $1.65 per gallon, 3 cents higher than the day before. Prices are about 60 cents higher than a year ago and almost 20 cents higher than a month ago.
