In the past few months a Colorado-based nonprofit organization, Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, has incited proposals that have helped pass referenda asking campuses to lower marijuana penalties to carry the same severity as those for alcohol. The schools that have passed referenda include such major universities as the University of Colorado, Colorado State University, Florida State University and the University of Maryland. SAFER's goal is "to educate the public about the simple fact that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol" and hopes to continue the spread of such policies around the nation's universities. Our columnists debate the safety of marijuana compared to alcohol, the legal implications in Indiana and whether such a proposal should be made at IU.

Militants storm U.S. Embassy in Syria; no Americans hurt
