Terror in the mirror

The Bush administration has recently blitzed the media with a wave of justifications for the war in Iraq and the War on Terror in order to convince the public of the non-existent connection between the two. But in all the unsatisfying explanations, Bush fails to mention that we're not fighting a war on terror ... we're engaging in our own form of terrorism.

Epic fights can't 'protect' butchered plot

When "Ong-Bak" was released last year, it signaled a new era of martial arts by introducing Muay Thai force of nature Tony Jaa. With Jackie Chan now in his 50s and Jet Li done with kung-fu epics, Jaa has taken up the torch -- but with a mess like "The Protector," he may very well fall flat on his face. Where "Ong-Bak" was about one man's quest to recover a stolen Buddha head, "Protector" is the same quest but for an elephant. Jaa plays Kham, the son of a village elder, raised to cherish the precious pachyderms as a symbol of ancient Thai culture. When two elephants are stolen by thugs from Australia, Kham journeys to the land down under to save the noble beasts while demolishing the crime syndicate responsible for his troubles.

Schedule a visit to 'Hollywoodland'

How do you turn a truly remarkable, mysterious story into a movie without it losing it to flopville? If you're the average director, you start by having one of Hollywood's top writers write you a script. But if you're director Allen Coulter (known for his work with "The Sopranos"), you may decide to pair up with someone like Paul Bernbaum and hope that, along with an all-star cast, your outcome is the exceptional movie, "Hollywoodland". In this case, your hopes would be justified.

South Korea signals continued support of U.S. alliance

Iraqi police discover 65 tortured bodies

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Police said they found the bodies of 65 men who had been tortured, shot and dumped, most around Baghdad, while car bombs and mortar attacks killed at least 39 people and wounded dozens more Wednesday.

Hoeppner to have surgery again

Three days after a victory against Ball State, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner announced he will take a temporary leave of absence to undergo surgery to remove a possible recurrent brain tumor. "I took (a scan) last Friday morning," Hoeppner said at a press conference Tuesday night. "There's been some change in the area."

The long arm of J-board

In the first 2 1/2 weeks of the semester, police arrested or cited 150 students for various offenses related to alcohol consumption. Their cases are currently making their way through Monroe County's justice system, but students will soon have to face justice from IU as well. According to Part II, Section H 26 of the Code of Student Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities, the University may discipline a student for any violation of Indiana or federal law. Students charged with violating this code will be scheduled a judicial conference where they will face anything from a warning to special judicial sanctions to expulsion from the University.

Letters 101

So you've decided to kill some time reading the Indiana Daily Student. After checking out the Sports Page, trying your hand at the Sudoku puzzle and wondering if anyone actually gets Blender Kitty, you come to the Opinion Page. And right there, under that smug, self-righteous mugshot, some cretin has written a column that you know to be downright untrue. Sure, the facts might be accurate, but the author is ignoring the lessons of 1968 (or any other year), or you know his side is far more to blame for the problem, or she clearly misunderstands your group. It's time to write a letter.

Student voices wanted: Who should be next IU president?

IU study looks at how paths are formed

Footsteps from the past have never affected the present so much, according to a recent IU study. Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower's theory of the way people walk was the basis of the placement of sidewalks on campuses around the country. During his was presidency at Columbia University, Eisenhower was asked how to best arrange the sidewalks so that campus buildings could be connected in the most efficient way.
