No Summer of Love

·

I am so tired of reading about the Summer of Love. More specifically, I’m tired of reading fawning, nostalgia-dripping, Boomer-ego-stroking articles about the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love. “It was a magical time of free love and consciousness-altering experimentation,” you say? “It showed the power of young people to change the world,” you say? So, you say you got a revolution?

On Monday night, I came to an embarrassing realization: I didn’t know who won the last four seasons of “American Idol.”

Sink the Quiz

Last week, a group of researchers released their findings about the “Thirsty Thursday” drinking habits of 3,341 volunteer undergraduates. The study, published in the journal “Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research,” found that about half of students who had late or no Friday classes drank on Thursday nights, but only one-third of students drank who had classes at or before 10 a.m. Furthermore, two-thirds of those drinkers with late or no Friday classes consumed a “binge amount” of alcohol.

Americana acoustic band stops at Bluebird Nightclub Saturday

·

For a band that has been together more than six years and played more than 700 shows, Railroad Earth’s musical philosophy is simple: “It’s really just about the music. If people are there to hear it, it’s just extra,” Tim Carbone, the band’s violinist, said.

When grunge ruled the world: A tribute to Chris Cornell

·

Older, wiser, but still successful, Cornell and the guys in Pearl Jam have come a long way from the solemn grunge rockers the world came to know in the early '90s. Yes, they are now elder statesmen with children and families but they have found their way out of the rain and are not afraid to enjoy the sun.

All five of these songs are top flight on their own, but the covers made them their own and gave the songs a new identity.

Verizon Wireless Music Center closing soon?

·

Following the announcement, more than 18,000 people -- enough to fill the lawn and part of the pavilion -- have signed an online petition to save the venue. "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot," commented one woman who signed the petition.

Sicko: A

·

Walking out of a movie theater enraged with a high-blood-pressure buzz on a Saturday afternoon is not exactly my idea of a good time, but I'd do it again in two heartbeats to see Michael Moore's fifth -- and arguably best and most effective -- big-screen documentary again.

Peace

·

Amnesty International just released "Instant Karma," a two-disc compilation entirely of Lennon music with proceeds going directly to Amnesty's efforts in Darfur. But the question still remains: Why now? Why Lennon?
