Police: Freshman died from injuries at party

·

The IU freshman who died last month of blunt force trauma to the head struck his head on a metal door casing a few minutes after performing a keg stand at Theta Chi fraternity, police said. When Seth Korona fell backward and struck his head, people around him thought he had passed out from drinking, according to an IU police press release. According to police, Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann has decided not to file charges in the case, saying there was no "criminal nexus." Salzmann could not be reached for further comment Friday.

IU students perform in Indianapolis

·

In the big city, four IU students are toiling with the "hardest profession in the world." An adult show, with an adult budget and adult demands are being placed on young performers who are meeting the rising bar, as they rehearse for this week's opening of Indianapolis' Civic Theatre's production of "The Secret Garden."

Letters to the editor

·

IU for higher education, not athletics glorification Alumnus Mark Young's letter ("Myles Brand should resign," Feb. 27) is both disrespectful slander and empty rhetoric. IU is an institute of higher education not a forum for athletic deification. I applaud our president for taking the much needed steps in refocusing our gaze back to academics and returning the athletic department to what it should be -- an enriching part of the college experience minus the commercialization. Students and alumni should look to IU as a great

Penalizing not a solution

Early last week the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house was put on suspension pending an investigation for a Saturday, Feb. 1 party involving alcohol. Police were alerted to the activities via an anonymous phone call. SAE is the fifth fraternity chapter to face suspension or expulsion at IU in the past 12 months. IU has been attempting to crack down on drinking that leads to injury and death in the past few years, yet alcohol-related incidents resulting in suspensions and probations of fraternity and sorority houses continue to occur. Obviously, the University has not yet hit upon the correct procedure for dealing with this problem.

Louisville a quality early season opponent

·

IU men's tennis team (2-0) used a team effort to defeat Toledo and Bowling Green last Saturday to win its first two matches of the spring season. The Hoosiers look to use that same formula today as they travel to Louisville to play the Cardinals (2-0) at 3:30 p.m. IU holds an 11-2 all-time mark against Louisville. The Cardinals defeated Illinois State and Northern Iowa last Saturday.

Hoosiers back home and rolling

·

STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Mike Davis had one wish. Before IU set out on its three-game road swing that ended Wednesday in Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center, IU's coach wanted two road wins. He got his wish, and the Hoosiers return Saturday to Assembly Hall, where they will play five of their next six, including four of their next five Big Ten games. IU (12-6, 5-1 Big Ten) pounded Penn State (5-12, 1-5) 85-51, marking the first time since the 1992-1993 season the Hoosiers have recorded three Big Ten road victories before February. "Ideally, we wanted to come out of this road trip (winning) one of three, and we get two of three," Davis said. "Now we have three road wins in the Big Ten, which is good."

Debate surrounds meeting

·

Three hours and numerous interruptions of parliamentary procedure after the beginning of Monday night's IU Student Association's Congress meeting, the group has a new budget for the 2002 fiscal year, beginning July 1. The satisfaction of unanimously passing a bill, however, was fleeting, with the death of the Academic Standards Act proposed by the executives soon to follow.

Come on down! See what you've won

·

Congratulations IU! You have claimed your first Big Ten Championship since 1993. You have defied the oddsmakers and become the conference dark horse. You're 6-3 against teams ranked in the top 25 at the time you played them. You're ranked in the top 25 in each of the major polls, and you have undoubtedly earned yourself a spot in the Big Dance. Your reward? The fifth-seeded, Michigan State.
