County courthouse marks 100 years

·

On May 21, the History Center debuted its two newest exhibits in honor of the 100th anniversary of the county courthouse, “100 Years Under the Fish” and “Life in 1908.” “100 Years Under the Fish” refers to the fish that tops the weather vane on the roof of the courthouse, and presents a timeline of the events since the courthouse’s construction, including the “Let’s Save It” campaign led by former County Commissioner Charlotte Zietlow in 1981.

The student-loan question

Until recently, things were looking bad for students trying to find money for college. These days, credit is notoriously hard to come by, and the market for student loans is no exception. Many companies were thinking of getting out of the market.

The spirit of summer music festivals

·

Many festivals and their corporate sponsors tend to trade in a safe, peaceful, and loving environment for one that will provide the most profit. Can the spirit of Woodstock '69 be captured again?

Nicholas Cage reprises his role as Benjamin Gates, though the results aren't as pleasing.

Overpriced treasure

·

If you didn’t fork over your money to see it in theaters, I certainly wouldn’t do it now to purchase the DVD. Even if you give leeway for the unrealistic plot, it still seems like “Book of Secrets” just doesn’t measure up to its predecessor.

Musical explorers Cryptacize push the boundaries of the term “radio friendly.”

Stripping down to the basics

·

Listen to any track on Cryptacize’s new album "Dig That Treasure" and it is apparent that the group is more interested in musical exploration than writing catchy hooks and melodies. This exploration has its positives and negatives.

2*Sweet gets sour with their new self-released album

No sweet, all sour

·

2*Sweet and Sleep have one major thing going for them: it doesn’t quite sound like anything else that is saturating the scene. The band combines some moderately heavy metal-influenced guitar riffs with opera-tinged vocals and melodies. And although it is all fairly unique in comparison to other bands, it doesn’t necessarily make them good.

3 Doors Down’s Greg Upchurch means business
during live performances.

3 doors down from the past

·

In light of their past success, 3 Doors Down show that they are back once again with a nwe self titled release that has already proven to be successful on the radio.

Bassist Mike Dirnt makes a change of pace with his role in Foxboro Hot Tubs.

Green Day stops, drops and rocks you

·

Most of the tracks on Stop see the members of Green Day attempting to escape the sound they made on American Idiot. There’s not a lot of soaring hooks here, but instead they’re replaced with a visceral garage rock sound that actually fits the band really well.

A zombie state trooper: a minor's worst nightmare.

Zombie gold

·

It’s been 40 years since George A. Romero unleashed “Night of the Living Dead,” and it’s only grown in cult status. Although this latest film might not be as earth shattering as “Night,” it still proves that he operates on a higher level of filmmaking than most horror directors.

The Roots represented hip-hop at this year's Summer Camp Festival.

Wet hot American Summer Camp Festival

·

In its eighth run, Summer Camp expanded to more than just a venue for 21st-century hippies and jam bands. Artists ranged from hip-hop to afrobeat to bluegrass, while an undertone of political and environmental awareness filled the park.
