Assistant Director of the II Pitigliani Jewish Community Center in Rome Laura Mincer accomplished two personal milestones this week. Not only did she venture to Bloomington for the first time, but her visit also marked the first time she set foot in the United States.

Living abroad amid tragedy

Last semester, I decided that I wanted to study abroad. After filling out massive amounts of paperwork, sending transcripts, and picking out classes, I prepared myself for what I knew would be the best experience of my life. I headed for London Sept. 9, and found myself mixed in with nearly 100 other American students from all throughout the United States. I had been here for nearly a day when tragedy struck back home. As I was walking back to my flat, I noticed that crowds of people were gathered around the nearest televisions. I couldn't believe my eyes. The first plane hit, and then another, and then the World Trade Center towers collapsed.

The harsh snapping of latex gloves echoes down the hallway of McNutt Quad, causing the man slumped miserably on the floor to wince. A male IU student has signed a search warrant for his side of the dorm room. Part-time police officers and seniors Eric Mayo and Nick Ojeda are going to search for any contraband.

Nelly to kick off Little 500 events

People who like the city of St. Louis, speak country grammar and believe the key to everything must be the money, are probably anticipating the arrival of Nelly today at the IU Auditorium. "I can't wait to see Nelly. I'm a big fan of his; his music just gets me so hyped!" freshman Dawn Brooks said. Nelly, also known as Cornell Haynes Jr., is from St. Louis and represents his city in almost all his work. Nelly was first a member of a rap group called the St. Lunatics. The group never received a record deal, so Nelly decided to go solo. Four years later, he had a smash hit with the single "Country Grammar."

U.S. victory increases support for team

At some point between the time the beer stops flowing and the coffee starts percolating, soccer fan John Wiesendanger will take a seat on his barstool with a stars-and-stripes sticker affixed to his chest. "Sleep is for wimps," he said. Indeed, Wiesendanger is one of those rare Americans who will do almost anything to watch the World Cup. The Philadelphian counts himself among the true soccer nuts, a member of the overwhelming minority of Americans who love watching the sport, and loved it even before the United States posted its biggest World Cup victory in 52 years last week, a 3-2 upset over Portugal.

Momentum key in win

Women's swimming coach Dorsey Tierney didn't expect her Hoosier squad to get off to a great start in its dual competition against in-state rival No. 22 Purdue. So when the No. 19 Hoosiers stole the 200-yard medley relay in the first event of the day, momentum was on IU's side. That momentum translated into a 183.5-114.5 Hoosier victory. "Purdue historically has a very good 200-medley relay," Tierney said. "I knew we were going to have to be the best we have been all year to even be competitive with their best relay. We wiped out the deficit with the relay, and I felt that Purdue was going to expect to win that relay and that if we were to sneak in there and get it that the momentum would certainly be in our favor."

Huber carries on Billingsley legacy, earns fourth coaching award

The 43-year-old diving team has made a name for itself nationally with numerous victories and a reputation of excellence. And only two coaches have been behind every success. From 1959-1989, coach Hobie Billingsley anchored the IU squad to 15 NCAA Championships and 19 Big Ten Championships. Billingsley also racked up nine U.S. National Diving Coach of the Year awards.

The IU Police Department reported the following activity: March 8 • IUPD and the Bloomington Fire Department responded to a fire at 901 E. 10th St. • Four 12-year-old females were referred to Probation Department for shoplifting at three different businesses on East Kirkwood Avenue. All the females were released to their parents.

Suspect ordered to undergo evaluation

For 34 years, Carol Jenkins' killer has skirted the criminal justice system. Now, it appears the man charged with her murder may elude his day in court. Thursday, Morgan County Superior Court 2 Judge Christopher Burnham ordered Kenneth C. Richmond to submit to a psychiatric evaluation, to be performed by two court-appointed psychiatrists. If Richmond is found to be mentally incompetent he will be committed to a mental health ward, where he will remain until he recovers sufficiently enough to understand the charges filed against him, said Morgan County Prosecutor Steve Sonnega.

Drinking among college students is always going to happen. The police and administration can place as many rules and heighten security as much as possible, but it will not stop students from drinking. This will only make students try to hide it more and therefore drink more alcohol in a shorter period of time.

Separation of state not part of Constitution In Ben Piper's column, "Vouchers won't save schools" (Feb. 25) he stated "…violates the separation of church and state, required by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution…" This is the only flaw in an otherwise well-written column. The First Amendment imposes that the state has no authority to impose an official religion, which is drastically different from the public conception of the First Amendment (separation of church and state).

4 U.S. troops killed in accident

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- At least four U.S. soldiers were killed Monday and a fifth was injured when rockets they were trying to destroy accidentally blew up. The casualty toll could rise because some soldiers were missing after the noontime explosion, U.S. officials said.

Responsibility lies with you

The memories and names of Joseph Bisanz and Seth Korona will remain in many IU students' and administrators' minds for a long time to come, and for good reason. Bisanz passed away in 1998 and Korona in February, each of alcohol-related deaths, each death resulting from drinking at a fraternity function.

IU analyst charged in federal court

IU analyst Kevin Sochocki has been federally charged on counts of child pornography and remains in Marion County Jail awaiting a federal grand jury.

Council approves Buskirk funding

The future of the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre finally looks secure, at least for the next three years. The Bloomington City Council preliminarily voted to approve $600,000 to help operate and fund the theatre, which the city of Bloomington will take control of in 2004. Mayor John Fernandez plans to raise an additional $600,000 through Tax Increment Financing to save the long financially beleaguered theatre. TIF funding is raised through property taxes in the area of the proposed capital project and is authorized through the Bloomington Redevelopment Commission.

Hoosiers bounce back

After a tough loss to nationally ranked Notre Dame Wednesday, the women's tennis team returned to form this weekend at the IU Tennis Center, defeating Big Ten adversaries Minnesota Saturday and Wisconsin Sunday, both by a decisive 6-1 score. IU (13-7, 4-2 Big Ten) wasted no time making a statement against Minnesota (13-4, 2-3 Big Ten). The Hoosiers jumped out to a quick lead by grabbing the doubles point for the sixth consecutive match. In the process, IU's No. 3 doubles team of junior Amanda Field and senior Jennifer Hsia won their sixth consecutive match together.

Judge releases protester from jail

Last Friday, police took Mike Andrews to jail after he sparred with an officer in a mass bike ride protest. After six days, he's finally leaving the Monroe County Correctional Center. Monroe Circuit Court Judge David Welch released Andrews, 54, from jail on bond reduction Thursday. At his Tuesday arraignment, Andrews delayed his release by refusing to plead, according to Welch's office.
