City Lights brings Tati masterpiece \'Playtime\' to Ballantine 013

·

If Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton would have successfully survived up until this point in cinema, it is easy to think this is what they would have created. Arguably Jacques Tati's ("Mr. Hulot's Holiday") masterpiece, "Playtime" transports Monsieur Hulot (Tati himself) through the chaotic reality of a French metropolis as he attempts to keep an appointment.

Life in the clothed lane

·

While posing nude, True and Pugh serve as an inspiration to artists. But in their everyday life, nudity takes on dimensions unknown to a flat canvas.

The Naked Truth

·

Twenty pairs of eyes stare in your direction, intent on memorizing the curl of your lips, the wrinkles on your brow, the curve of your shoulder. You feel a cold breeze against your back. Shivering, you realize the tiny goose bumps that appear on your skin result from being completely naked. If you think this is your worst nightmare, think again.

Closing the chapter on adolescent angst

·

It all started back in 1993. I remember watching MTV and seeing this funky multi-colored swirl of a video come on. The soaring high-pitched guitars matched the high-pitched vocals of the lead singer. "What the hell is this?" I remember thinking to myself. That was my introduction to the Smashing Pumpkins.

Dance Marathon: Burning the midnight oil

·

Sleep deprivation -- an affliction that costs the nation as much as $100 billion annually, has been linked to 100,000 auto accidents a year. The crippling fatigue it brings is so much more than statistics. But a college student, aggrieved over the loss of a friend, began a legacy of vigil that makes insomnia honorable for one weekend a year.

Aesop\'s lyrics \'Float\' above the rest

·

Hip-hop's metaphorical king, AesopROCK, has a lot to say on his first label-supported album, Float. The 20-track LP offers some of hip-hop's most interesting lyrics to date. Float's production has its ups and downs, but overall, the beats prove to be a perfect soundtrack for Aesop to confuse us with.

'Vance' shoots par

·

Robert Redford's latest film, "The Legend of Bagger Vance," is exactly everything you expect it to be. It is unlikely that anyone will be disappointed by it, while no one will be surprised by it either. In other words, "Bagger Vance" is "Good Will Hunting" meets "The Horse Whisperer" and "Ordinary People." You can see every generic formula and cliché coming from miles away while watching this film.

Nonpoint not bad

·

South Florida metal band Nonpoint made a pretty decent debut with its freshman release Statement. Unlike many of its metal compatriots, Nonpoint can actually harmonize and, for the most part, exceed the clichés of incoherent lyrics, over-bearing guitar riffs and the angsty B.S. that so many other metal bands are rife with. Sounding like a hybrid of 311 and the Deftones, Nonpoint exudes a smooth yet ruffled sound.

Clowns

·

"Shhh, it's a dead body in my trunk. Wanna see it? F**k around and you\'ll be it." That's right, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are back -- back and lamer than ever. The shock-rock rap duo Insane Clown Posse just released its latest album, Bizzar, which fails artistically on a number of levels. Poor spelling is the least of ICP's woes. Then again, that's something of a given -- it would be hard to say Insane Clown Posse has a lot going for it in terms of band concept. Granted, rock isn't known for a rich intellectual tradition. Still, the psycho ninja clown schtick -- it really can't get any more inane.

No spotlight necessary

The first drop of legendary sweat rolled off his nose about halfway through the set. Bob Dylan was here to get down to business, doing what he has done best for over thirty years: entertaining and enchanting.

IU lacks focus on arts, humanities

·

There once was a time within living memory when IU could honestly state that the arts and humanities were essential to its character. But, evidently, not so anymore.

Salaries in story are not the average

·

This morning I was stunned to see what is obviously considered ... as an average faculty salary. The rates he quotes are double the salary the professors I work with are making.

Zell prejudiced toward Africa

·

This is in reaction to Brian Zell's dissent column Oct. 25 entitled "Why I support ELF (and you should too)" where he made an ignorant, prejudiced and insulting comment to the continent of Africa, its inhabitants and those whose ancestry traces back to that continent.
