Indiana sees higher rate of whooping cough this year SOUTH BEND -- The number of whooping cough cases in Indiana has nearly doubled since 2003, and health officials are at a loss to explain why. Eighty-seven cases of whooping cough have been reported so far this year in Indiana, up from 44 cases recorded at the same time in 2003, health officials said.

For the past two years, billiards has been conspicuously missing from the long list of intramural sports offered by the IU RecSports program, but this fall marks its return. The program initially left campus due to lack of participation, but because students missed the program, it is back by popular demand.

'Star Wars' hits Bloomington Best Buy

Freshman Joseph Loy stood in line for more than five hours to get his copy of the "Star Wars" trilogy. Loy joined more than 200 people gathered before midnight on Monday to wait in line at Best Buy for their copy of the "Star Wars" Trilogy on DVD. Employees dressed as Storm Troopers, Imperial Guards and Darth Vader greeted "Star Wars" fans at the doors.

Kernan criticizes Daniels for 2001 IPALCO deal, job loss

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Joe Kernan stepped up criticism of Republican opponent Mitch Daniels on Tuesday for backing the sale of Indianapolis utility IPALCO Enterprises to a Virginia-based company in 2001.

Nader's off the ballot in New Mexico and Arkansas, on in Maryland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Judges in New Mexico and Arkansas denied Ralph Nader access to the Nov. 2. ballot in those states Monday, but the independent presidential hopeful won a spot on the ballot in Maryland. In New Mexico, State District Judge Theresa Baca found that Nader does not qualify as an independent under state law because he is running in other states as the nominee for minor parties.

Daily grind leaves senior's plate full

After hammering the snooze button with a full fist, the typical IU student tries desperately just to get those ever-so-important five extra minutes of sleep. Getting on and successfully riding the bus is even more of a challenge, filled with constant head-nods and dozing-off. And the further into the semester, that morning shower becomes scarier and the Starbucks cups or a want for a direct IV line of coffee becomes more prevalent. And we haven't even talked about class and the struggle to pencil in a nap somewhere.

Bush defends decision to invade Iraq to U.N. General Assembly

UNITED NATIONS -- President George W. Bush delivered an unapologetic defense of his decision to invade Iraq, telling the United Nations Tuesday that his decision "helped to deliver the Iraqi people from an outlaw dictator." Later Bush condemned the beheading of a U.S. hostage by an Islamic militant. Bush's speech to the U.N. General Assembly, running just 24 minutes, appealed to the world community to join together in supporting the new Iraqi interim government.

IU hopes to bounce back against Boilers

The brooms were out this past weekend at the T.I.S. Bookstore Invitational, held at IU's University Gym. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the visiting teams were the ones cleaning up, sweeping IU three matches to none. Despite losses to Kent State University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Alabama, there were bright spots and even an IU milestone that has the team confident and ready to move on. In the loss to Kent State, senior Christina Archibald's 26 kills helped her set a new all-time kills record at IU. Archibald has now recorded 1,547 kills, breaking the previous record set by Melissa Brewer in 2003.

Former judge lectures on terrorism

Honorable Justice Michael Kirby of the High Court of Australia was the guest lecturer for the Branigin lecture on the 'Global response of courts to terrorism' Tuesday in the Moot Court Room of the School of Law. Among the issues addressed in the lecture were the last 'century of terrorism,' European Court of Human Rights cases and recent judicial decisions in countries concerning alleged terrorists.

Kicked in the Cup

My buddies J.R. and Ike had been reading my columns and decided I needed a break from the grind. They thought my rants about certain players were getting harsher because I need to relax. So they suggested I watch a less intense athletic activity, and it was time for the Ryder Cup. With that we got a case of beer, a few bags of chips, started up the barbecue and readied ourselves for a stress-free weekend. We had no idea what we were in for.

Web site claims hostage killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A posting on an Islamic Web site claimed Tuesday that the al Qaeda-linked group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has slain a second American hostage in Iraq. The claim could not be verified immediately. The group kidnapped two Americans -- Jack Hensley and Eugene Armstrong -- along with Briton Kenneth Bigley in Baghdad Sept. 16. Armstrong was beheaded by al-Zarqawi, and the militants on Monday posted a gruesome video of his death.

When I think of Louisiana, a few things come to mind: the wailing sound of southern jazz and amazing Creole and Cajun food. Creoles were the original French settlers of New Orleans. These people were mostly rich aristocrats. Cajuns, on the other hand, were Acadians, or poor peasants from France. These people settled around New Orleans in the bayous and prairies of southern Louisiana.

I don't tan. Never have. I could get totally naked, lube my entire body in Crisco, lay down on a blanket of tin foil, roast in the middle of the freakin' equator and still not show even the slightest bit of a golden complexion. The anti-albino gene is apparently missing from my genetic code. Whenever my skin is exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time, it goes through two stages. First, it turns red. Not just ordinary red either, but the kind of bright neon red that might be produced if a tomato had sex with a stop sign.

If first lady Laura Bush were your soccer mom, she'd be the one parent on the sideline screaming, "Don't bother running! You'll never score!" At least, that's her attitude on stem cell research. She thinks funding this science and having the potential to save the lives of many sick people, isn't a battle worth fighting simply because it gets peoples' hopes in the air.

What should the world's response to terrorism be? This is an issue that has been debated ever since the Sept. 11 attacks. However, until recently, very few countries around the world understood how the United States felt and why it wanted to pursue terrorists the way it did. The recent attacks against a Russian school has served as a wake-up call not only to Russia but to the rest of the world as well. Terrorists are heartless killers who should be hunted down like the cowards they are, regardless of whose feelings get hurt.

Emmy winner to film documentary on BPP

Although it is celebrating its 25th year of theater magic, the Bloomington Playwrights Project isn't throwing itself a party or buying itself presents. It isn't wearing a pointed birthday hat or eating cake and ice cream. Instead, the BPP will be the subject of a documentary created by two-time Emmy winner Bob Risher.

Purdue on the right trax

Within the next couple of weeks, Purdue students will enjoy a privilege most students in Bloomington are already privy to -- free music downloads. The difference is the downloading in which Purdue students will engage will be legal. Through an agreement with a campus-oriented file-sharing company, Boilermakers will be allowed to download hundreds of thousands of music tracks without giving up a red cent. IU students should be taking notice.

Baseball fund-raiser to benefit play group

While Major League Baseball players have months to prepare for the playoff series, Bloomington Playwrights Project teams get only 24 hours. This weekend the BPP proudly presents its Playoff Series, a baseball-themed fund-raiser. "We needed an idea for a profitable fund-raiser," said Sonja Johnson, BPP development director. "(Our artistic director) had done something similar to this with another group, and it was very successful, so we decided to try it."
