Hoosiers splash home 6th in Big Ten Tournament

The IU women's golf team rode a pair of top-10 finishes, which made for a solid weekend for the Hoosiers, who finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships. The championships were held in Bloomington for the first time since 1966.

Swimming & diving

IU coach ray looze was pegged for double duty this year. The men's swimming and diving coach took over the women's team and both programs excelled in his first year at the dual helm.

Women's basketball

In its first postseason tournament, since the 2000-01 season, the IU women's basketball team refused to go quietly in its second-round WNIT game against Indiana State in Terre Haute. With IU down 59-58 to the Sycamores in the closing minutes, senior guard Cyndi Valentin -- in her only postseason as a Hoosier -- took over, scoring IU's last 10 points of the game. Valentin's scoring barrage included a 3-pointer, one three-point play and four-consecutive free throws down the stretch that iced the 68-62 IU victory.

Wrestling

Joe dubuque finished his senior season just as he had started it -- a national champion. Dubuque defeated Troy Nickerson, a true freshman out of Cornell, March 18 to become the first Hoosier to win back-to-back NCAA wrestling championships. Dubuque finished the season 28-1, with his only loss coming to Kyle Ott of Illinois in the Big Ten semifinals. The loss to Ott snapped a 28-match win streak for Dubuque dating back to the 2005 Big Ten semifinals.

Patron finds part of finger in food at TGI Friday's

TGI Friday's added a new hamburger topping Tuesday night: finger. At about 7:30 p.m., a patron in the College Mall restaurant received a hamburger that had a piece of a human fingertip on it. The patron saw the flesh before eating the burger and called the police.

Read Dining Hall has cockroach problem, former employees say

Several former employees at Read Center said they believe there is a cockroach problem at Read Dining Hall, claiming IU officials are ignoring a growing problem. One former Read employee, Rhea Kutche, said there were cockroaches in the salad bar, ice cream machine and kitchen. Kutche, who used to be an assistant dining manager at the residence hall, alleges that cockroaches fell out of the ice cream machine when students pulled the dispenser handle, and said she was told to cut the mold off of old cheese so it could be used.

Hoosiers tapped in draft

Former IU football players Victor Adeyanju and Isaac Sowells were picked back-to-back in the fourth round of the NFL Draft Sunday. The 6-foot-3, 324-pound Sowells went to the Cleveland Browns with the 112th pick overall, while the St. Louis Rams nabbed the speedy defensive end Adeyanju with the very next pick.

Students get 7th football game

IU students will receive a seventh game with their football season ticket package in 2006, but will pay about 34 percent more than they did in 2005. Student season football tickets will cost $19 more than last year's $55 because of the addition of a seventh home football game, an increase in the service fee and a $10 T-shirt. Pete Rhoda, director of athletic media relations, attributed the increase in service fee to the cost of processing delivery. The fee increased $1 from last year.

Women's tennis

On the weekend of March 24,the IU women's tennis team collected two wins against ranked Big Ten opponents at the Indiana Tennis Center and propelled coach Lin Loring, already the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history, to just one win shy of 300 Big Ten wins.

IU might have hit its ceiling in only the fourth game of the season. With 10:30 left in a game against No. 1-ranked Duke, senior forward Marco Killingsworth finished a fast break with a thundering dunk and a quick swing of his fist.

Magazine ranks business school 10th in nation

Shouts of joy erupted from Kelley School of Business students Friday morning as they celebrated the announcement of the school's undergraduate program top-10 ranking in the nation by Business Week. The program was ranked fourth among public schools in the country and 10th overall, according to a news release. The first-ever ranking of the top 50 undergraduate business programs by Business Week was released via a Web chat late Thursday night.

Activation generation

Last Thursday, MTV released a report ... Yes, you read that right. In their continuing quest to involve themselves in everything except music, MTV released a report on the findings of an extensive survey regarding activism among young people, ages 12 to 24. True to form, while their presentation was striking -- indeed, I would describe it as being a sin against the graphical arts and (aesthetically) the single ugliest piece of research I've ever seen -- their content wasn't terribly groundbreaking. MTV's central conclusion was that an "activation gap" exists between the number of young people expressing an interest in getting involved in social causes, and the number actually involved in said causes -- that is, more people claim to be interested than actually do anything.

IU must address _____ (campus problem)

The football team has lost against _____ (NCAA Division I, II or III football team). We never should have fired ____ (basketball coach), or never should have hired ____ (different basketball coach). IU professor helps found free democratic Bulgarian university

Almost 20 years ago, Randall Baker, a professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, was approached by a woman on a bridge in Bath, England, who made him an interesting offer; she wanted him to help found the first free democratic university in Bulgaria.
