Right-wing columnists are abundant in college newspapers (I can attest to the situation at Ohio State, where I graduated), but most of their time is spent complaining about the “lack of freedom” in college.

Crossing Jordan

I am writing to express my strong concern about the traffic on the IU campus. Many examples might be given in this regard, but the one that I have in mind is the pedestrian crossing on Jordan Avenue and Seventh Street by the Jordan stream, close to the exit from the parking garage. Many drivers act as if this pedestrian crossing were not there.

Awan’s column right on the money

I wanted to commend columnist Ayesha Awan for her column on Wednesday, “Facebook Activism?” She is absolutely right. If someone cares about an issue, be it Barack Obama’s presidential campaign or the right to habeas corpus, it is not enough to join a Facebook group espousing this belief. In the age of the Internet, it is all too common that people believe their Facebook profiles speak for them enough.

IU smoking ban ‘not workable’

The proposed campus-wide smoking ban which will take effect in January is an unworkable and lamentable idea. Certainly, there is reason to be concerned for the health of the student body, and it is understandable why the campus has banned smoking within 30 feet of buildings.

Dugdale’s article nothing but self-hatred

Colin Dugdale’s article that appeared in INside magazine should in fact have been published in the Opinion section of the IDS, as it was a thinly-veiled diatribe bashing a minority of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community.

As IU workers suffer, so does IU

It is regrettable that the IDS did not cover the Labor Studies Brown Bag presentation called Outsourcing Jobs at IU on Thursday, Sept. 27. As vice president of the Communications Workers of America Local 4730, I believe that the IDS missed a forum addressing one of the most pressing issues on campus.

American Gladiator

When I was a little kid, I dreamed of being on three shows: “Legends of the Hidden Temple,” “GUTS” and “American Gladiators.” Since Nickelodeon Games and Sports no longer exists (and since I’m no longer allowed to participate in kids’ game shows), my chance of fulfilling my dream has dwindled down to “American Gladiators.”

Meat-free anniversary

Preach on, Preacher Dan!

"Brother Jim” Gilles is on a mission from God to save your soul. According to his Web site, he has been “your holiness home missionary to the universities America” since 1982. But if he wants to preach at campuses in Indiana, he will have to stay within university-designated areas. Brother Jim sued Vincennes University in 2004 when it required him to file a request before speaking on campus and restricted him to a sidewalk in front of the student union. He claimed that the space was infrequently visited by students and contained loud background noise from passing vehicles.

Tired of politics

The American people are sick and tired of politics as usual. For seven years, we have had to endure partisanship that has reached unbelievable levels under a Republican- led government and has not improved much with a Democrat-controlled congress. President Bush’s approval ratings are in the dirt at around 31 percent and Congress isn’t far behind at 22 percent.

Uniting to take back the night

About 80 students and Bloomington residents joined together Tuesday night to “Take Back the Night” in the struggle against domestic violence and sexual assault. A candlelight vigil in honor of six Bloomington women murdered in domestic disputes and also for women raped in Bloomington opened the rally in Dunn Meadow.

Season ticket packages for students cut by 2 games

The IU Athletics Department will refund part of the cost of student season ticket packages because it received a record number of applications – about 9,200 – for an 18-game ticket package. Now, students will only get about 16 games.
