Halloween proper might not be until the middle of next week, but we all know that it’s this weekend that really matters. (It’s a bit difficult to party on a Wednesday. Not that you shouldn’t try – this is IU, after all.) Thus, you should start working on your costume immediately, if you haven’t already. Undoubtedly, some of you topical types are going to want to dress up like the candidates for the 2008 presidential election.

IU is no stranger to change, Michael McRobbie said as he officially became IU’s 18th president Thursday. “Indiana University’s history is a story of change in response to the demands of the time,” McRobbie said to a crowd of about 1,800.

Great debate

The controversy in Jena, La., has thrown discrimination back into the limelight of U.S. debate after six black high school students were charged under obviously racist pretenses for attempted murder. With a Capitol Hill hearing, thousands of words of commentary in Internet forums and Facebook activists appearing in droves, the Jena Six have lit a racially charged fuse that has not been seen since the O.J. Simpson murder trial of 1994.

Horses, Marching Hundred lead Homecoming parade

Islamo-Fascist follies

Starting today, a coalition of conservative organizations will be holding “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week” at college campuses across the country. Organized by the David Horowitz Freedom Center, the event will include demonstrations, petitions, distribution of political materials and speeches by figures such as Horowitz, Ann Coulter and U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, who will all confront “the two Big Lies of the political left: that George Bush created the war on terror and that Global Warming is a greater danger to Americans than the terrorist threat.”

3 costly fumbles doom IU vs. Penn State

Sophomore quarterback Kellen Lewis threw for 308 yards and three scores and added another on a 56-yard touchdown run, but also committed three costly turnovers - including one that clinched the game for Penn State with under a minute left in the fourth quarter - as the IU football team fell to 5-3, 2-3 in the Big Ten.

Kelvin Sampson was surrounded by 13,000 of his biggest supporters, but he stood alone at the center of the court at Assembly Hall. For the second year in a row, he had a hard time speaking at Hoosier Hysteria. The crowd wouldn’t give him a chance to talk.

5 arrested in local drug bust

After four months of investigation, the Bloomington Police Department arrested five individuals early Thursday on drug charges and removed six children from the suspects’ residence.

Hoosiers to compete in Vanderbilt Invitational

The IU football team won’t be the only athletes competing this weekend. The women’s tennis team will head to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Vanderbilt Invitational. After competing in the Hoosier Classic two weeks ago, the team has been hard at work perfecting both its singles and doubles play.

IU students participate in 2nd annual torch ride to benefit IUDM and Riley

More than 60 IU students will gear up for the IU Dance Marathon’s second annual torch ride today. The 60-mile bicycle ride, which starts at the Riley Outpatient Center in Indianapolis and ends in Bloomington, was created to honor Riley Hospital patients and Ashley Crouse, a former IU student and IUDM organizer who was killed in a car accident in 2005.
