Wiccans, pagans to meet for Samhain celebration

Beginning at 7 p.m. tonight, Willkie Auditorium will host a Samhain celebration. The event, coordinated by Willkie Community Instructor Kim Shrack, will educate students about Wicca and paganism during the religions’ most important holiday.

Foster Quad’s Hoosier Den wins interior design award

Flat screen TVs, two pool tables, a pingpong table and different game machines greet those who enter Foster Quad’s Hoosier Den. The contemporary space, which opened last winter, recently took second place in a national design competition sponsored by the Association of University Interior Designers.

Nourishment for your workout

Although we all love eating, there is another side of being healthy besides making good food choices: exercise. I wish we all had the metabolism of those girls walking around in their leggings while chugging whipped-up Starbucks Frappuccinos (which are not good for you, by the way – steer clear), but most of us are not so lucky.

Too soon to study abroad

Freshman year can be a difficult but incredible experience. Although some certainly adjust better than others, most freshmen are able to get to know their school and the people in it pretty well. Imagine, however, if this adjustment had to take place during someone’s sophomore year. As more universities are sending students abroad in their first year it seems it will be the fate of more and more freshmen to spend a year enrolled in a university without really knowing how it fits them.

Counsel from camp

It’s one great week. No, it is not Little 500 week. It’s not Welcome week. It is not the week of Hanukkah or the first week of summer. It’s not even a full week. Rather, it is five great days, and it happens in a little place called Morgantown. This is the week of camp for all the people involved with Camp Kesem – a free, week-long camp for kids whose parents have or have had cancer. It is a week away from the difficulties at home, and it gives these kids a chance to be just that: kids.

Fearless joy

In the hustle-bustle competitive existence of academia, it’s vitally important to enjoy the simple things. Taking time to smell the roses isn’t just a kitschy cliche; it’s essential to a joyful existence. An impromptu coffee date with an old friend, a pre-class Runcible Spoon breakfast, a deep breath of crisp fall air. These are the things that keep me going in the midst of personal disasters and unbearable class stress. They remind me that things are honestly not that bad.

The students in the class for which I am a teaching assistant asked me a rather interesting question: Why is J.K. Rowling’s Dumbledore character gay? After an awkward explanation of the birds and the bees, we moved forward with more relevant inquiries to the world of public affairs, such as why Sen. Larry Craig is gay?
