Six former IU Indianapolis men’s basketball players filed a lawsuit Monday against the university over alleged misconduct by former head coach Paul Corsaro. They allege that Corsaro “subjected them to relentless psychological and physical abuse or harassment.”
Corsaro was fired in May after the university determined his “behavior did not meet the university’s values and standards regarding the treatment of student athletes,” according to a statement given to the IndyStar. In a tort claim notice sent to the university in October, Corsaro called his dismissal “wrongful termination.”
Corsaro intended to take legal action against the university, although no suit has been filed, and Corsaro’s lawyers told the Indiana Daily Student in an email that the university has yet to respond to the tort claim notice.
All six former players played for IU Indy men’s basketball during the 2024-25 season under coach Corsaro. They allege Corsaro regularly used slurs demeaning women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, among others, in interactions with players during practices, games and off the court.
One player said he delayed care for a concussion over fear of further abuse. When he received care and medical staff placed a minutes restriction on him, the complaint alleges Corsaro called him a slur and said “real men play through concussions.”
The complaint alleges that when that same player rolled his ankle during practice and was slow to return to play, Corsaro said his “mother must have raised a real bitch.”
Additionally, the players allege that Corsaro was physically abusive on many occasions. They said Corsaro choked and punched one player and used a sharpie to write demeaning language on another.
The complaint alleges Corsaro "choked, shoved, shoulder slammed, chest slammed, and otherwise physically harmed all Plaintiffs.” The tort claim notice states that an investigation done by the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel substantiated that he “bumped a single player during a practice.” Corsaro claims he was attempting to “instruct the player how to properly absorb contact when attempting to score under the basket.”
The former players allege that Corsaro’s misconduct was done in front of NCAA and IU Indy officials and that because of “Defendants’ failure to reasonably supervise Corsaro, and because of Corsaro’s conduct, the Plaintiffs suffered devastating and reasonable emotional distress, loss of scholarships, loss of name-image-likeness income, and loss of earning potential, among other damages.”
A letter sent by the players’ attorneys to the university in June indicates that a minimum of $2,438,708 is sought in damages. In response, the university rejected the implication that Indiana University is liable and denied all claims of negligence.
The lawsuit now alleges counts of negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress, negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention, breach of contract and respondeat superior against Indiana University.
The plaintiffs seek a trial by jury, and multiple subpoenas have been filed already. An IU spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit.
