No need to Phish for fans

·

he last thing someone would think when hearing Phish’s newest album is that the jam band has been inactive for five years. The 2004 breakup was hard on fans, but diehard Phishheads will be consoled with the brilliant display of lyricism and feel-good beats on their new album, “Joy.”

Soft ballads herald new image for Day

·

After a six-year hiatus during which the singer-songwriter had two mega hits on the radio and two alcohol-related arrests, Howie Day has returned with “Sound The Alarm,” a collection of soft ballads that seem to open a new chapter in Day’s life.

"Whiteout"

‘Whiteout’ should be blacked out

·

Sitting through “Whiteout” is like watching a young child put together a small puzzle while giving a play-by-play. You don’t really know what is driving the action or why it is even happening, but at least things seem to make sense to the child even if the final product doesn’t look the same as the box cover.

Boys like writing horrible lyrics

·

Boys Like Girls’ self-titled debut featured soaring, sugary songs that were more sophisticated than usual generic power-pop.Everything found on their second effort, “Love Drunk,” is not.

"I Can Do Bad All By Myself"

Note to Tyler Perry: Stop ruining your movies

·

This would have been a much better movie if Tyler Perry hadn’t inserted himself into it.And by “himself,” I mean his trash-talking grandma character Madea, whose main plot purpose was to give tough love and ham-handed advice to a group of kids caught breaking into her house.

‘Songs’ shows Yo La Tengo can still pop

·

The most remarkable thing about Yo La Tengo might be the band’s sheer consistency. After 25 years and a dozen albums, they continue to crank out carefully crafted, abundantly creative tunes. Their latest album, “Popular Songs,” shows no sign that they’re slowing down.

fringe

‘Fringe’ stays far from the edge

·

At its heart, “Fringe” is a show about the unknown and the many different ways it can kill you.The show’s first episode carefully crafts the “Fringe” universe, but the show runs into problems with what does in that universe.

"The Blueprint 3"

Jay-Z caps ‘Blueprint’ trilogy

In 2001, “The Blueprint” hit stores and soon became a timeless hip-hop album, further solidifying Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter’s legacy as a legend in the rap game. Now, eight years later, Jay-Z is a married man whose name permeates the business world as well as the music industry.

How I learned to stop worrying and love the movies

·

In terms of being a real professional, I am by no means a “film buff” yet. I am well informed, but what I have accomplished is not far from anyone’s reach.Aside from just being more intelligent, aware and knowledgeable about life and the popular culture that surrounds it, truly intelligent film conversations are things I don’t usually have, and they would be nice.  It gets lonely here at the top.
