FANCY EATER

It isn’t difficult to eat well in Bloomington. There are restaurants catering to sophisticated tastes all over town, but the most obvious response when asked for a fine dining establishment is the Scholars Inn Gourmet Cafe & Wine Bar, located at 717 N. College Ave.

University Eats

·

In my first column of the year, I admonished readers to step away from their microwaves, get out into Bloomington and try some of our wonderful local restaurants. After poring over this issue’s restaurant guide, I’m sure you’re all going to take my advice and sample some of what our town has to offer.

Second Amendment Love

·

You want to talk about an abuse of an amendment? Say what you will, but having hopeful government officials and former army veterans showing people how to shoot and giving them bullets isn’t what the founding fathers thought of when they came up with the Second Amendment.

Wrongfully terminated

·

Season Two of “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” follows the world’s most badass single mom (Lena Headey) as she tries to protect her son, the world’s future leader, John Connor (Thomas Dekker). Following a similar formula as the “Terminator” movies, the Connors are protected by a terminator, this time a female robot named Cameron (Summer Glau).

Quirk gives flavor to local dining scene

·

Like any college town, Bloomington has plenty of places to get pizza or a burger. While those are perfectly acceptable options, the town also offers many more adventurous choices for food and atmosphere.

Back of the bus

·

The soundtrack to the first few weeks of the semester is one of jarring ambulance sirens, where alcohol neophytes are frantically rushed from the dorms to the hospital. New students stroll the unfamiliar streets twirling lanyards while cocksure upperclassmen yell “freshmen” from their speeding cars. Freshmen get ripped-off by paying California prices for Indiana pot. Fortunately, most annoyances recede relatively quickly, except for one: students who won’t move to the back of the bus.

That movie was so fascist

·

What really gets me – and I mean, as a history major, really gets me – is the recent trend in political discourse of interchanging the terms ‘communism’ and ‘fascism’ as well as the relative frequency with which they are employed.

Nathan Fillion kills in ‘Castle’

Suddenly appearing on crowded Monday nights last spring, ABC’s “Castle” was sort of underappreciated and glossed over by many viewers. If you were one of those viewers, now’s your chance to catch this well-written cop dramedy.

Missing the point

·

Democrats just don’t get it. Neither do Republicans, for that matter. That’s right. As if the record deficits, half-hearted military efforts and endless scandals of recent decades weren’t proof enough, our political leaders have decided to prove they can’t focus on what matters when it comes to health care either.

Toy Story 3D

Cine'cism

·

Why are they doing this to us? Why is Disney mocking us by re-releasing the first two “Toy Story” films in theaters? Both of the classics are now being reissued in 3-D, and with it comes the increased ticket price, and for any true lovers of the franchise, some potential lawsuits.RealD 3-D can be remarkably artistic when applied in films like “Coraline,” an unnecessary, yet glamorous distraction in “Monsters vs. Aliens” and a noticeable, but otherwise inconsequential addition to films like “Up.”

IU volleyball beats Purdue in five-set thriller

·

IU volleyball coach Sherry Dunbar said her team would have to be ready for a five-set match against Purdue given the rivalry’s recent history. That recent history repeated itself Wednesday, but this time the end result favored IU.
