Center’s contest looks for best campus singer

Along with approximately 100 other students, McShay auditioned for the sixth annual “Campus Super Star” competition at the Indiana Memorial Union, organized by the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center. Students who attend any college or university in Indiana were eligible to audition.

Pa. school defends spy charges

A school district accused of secretly switching on laptop webcams inside students’ homes said it never used webcam images to monitor or discipline students. The Lower Merion School District acknowledged webcams were activated 42 times in the past 14 months but only to find missing, lost or stolen laptops.

Danes challenge eco study

Denmark’s reputation as a leader in sustainability was at an all-time high after December’s U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. A new study, however, reveals the country might not live up to its idyllic green image. Denmark ranked No. 32 with only average scores in the recent Environmental Performance Index released by researchers at Yale and Columbia Universities. Especially surprising was that Denmark was positioned in the same category as the United States, typically thought of as somewhat negligent in environmental conservation efforts.

Indianapolis officials say they’re drawing on lessons learned while visiting Miami for this year’s Super Bowl as they prepare to host the big game in 2012. “The eyes of the world have never been on Indianapolis the way they are going to be for the Super Bowl,” said Allison Melangton, president and CEO of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee. “We have to take advantage of that, and we have to be ready for it.”

Marine from Columbus, Ind., dies in Afghanistan

The military says a Marine from Indiana has died while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced Saturday that 27-year-old Sgt. Jeremy R. McQueary of Columbus, Ind., died Thursday in Helmand province.

Goshen college lifts 116-year ban on national anthem

GOSHEN, Ind. — For more than a century, there was no playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Goshen College — a small Christian college with ties to the Mennonite Church. That’s about to change. For the first time in the school’s history, Goshen College will play an instrumental version of the national anthem before many campus sporting events.
