The wrong way to peace

·

Because most of the media coverage has been focused on the terrorist attacks, many Americans have not noticed that the situation in the Middle East has gotten progressively worse since the events of Sept. 11. The number of killings have risen on both the Palestinian side and the Israeli side, and no one outside the region seems to notice. Now, members of the cabinet on both sides seem to be the targets of attacks. Israeli cabinet member Rechavam Zeevi was shot in the head and the neck Wednesday, in an attempt to end a cease-fire between the Israelis and Palestinians, CNN reports.

Defensive changes help Hoosiers

·

Cam Cameron waited until Wednesday to implement a handful of defensive changes for Saturday's match-up with defending Big Ten champion Northwestern. His late change of heart proved to be perfect timing. Perfect as in two interceptions, two fumbles and IU's second win -- a 56-21 thumping of the Wildcats -- of the season in front of 26,213 at Memorial Stadium.

Turnovers turn game to Patriots

·

NEW ORLEANS -- The New England Patriots made this a Super Bowl to remember, for all the right reasons. Adam Vinatieri kicked a 48-yard field goal as time expired, capping a thrilling final two minutes and giving the Patriots a 20-17 upset over the St. Louis Rams on a red, white and blue Sunday.

Balloon launch hurts environment

The opening ceremonies for the men's Little 500 race included fanfare, guest speakers, a color guard, a capella singing, an invocation and the introduction of the 33 teams. Amid the excitement of these events, the competitive spirit in the air and support from the crowd, the traditional balloon launch was only a brief and minimal part of the celebration. While the balloons were colorful and fun, they were an unnecessary and environmentally unfriendly gesture that easily could have been left out of the ceremony.

NFL season picks and pans

Thirty-one teams. Twenty-one weeks. One trophy. The NFL season is upon us again. With the season still young, many of these teams have high hopes. Super Bowl ads don't disappoint

·

NEW YORK -- It was a rare Super Bowl where the game may have been more entertaining than the commercials. Super Bowl advertisers appealed to a range of emotions -- from grief, gratitude and nostalgia to humor and a lust for mayhem -- in pitches Sunday that Fox said were sold at an average of just under $2 million per 30-second ad.

Three Minute Mile on the rise

·

In the few short years since its formation, Three Minute Mile has risen to prominence as a well-known Bloomington band. How does a college band that relies on original music not only survive in Bloomington, but often draw an even bigger crowd than the cover bands? It has to do with they way it treats its fans, said Dan Duncan, one of the owners of Vertigo, 107 W. Ninth St. "Three Minute Mile are very approachable," Duncan said. "Most bands don't want to be bothered before and after the shows. They're willing to talk to the fans."

World issues do affect your life

·

There is a war in the Middle East that affects most of our lives in a direct way. And many might not even realize it. The problems in the Middle East have been around since before Christ's time on earth, and it is very optimistic to think that in the next few weeks and months we will find a quick fix. But why should regular Joes in Bloomington be concerned with a bunch of crazy Palestinians and Israelis running around trying to blow one another up?

'Hard Candy' a sweet treat for summer

·

Admittedly, about a month ago, when I first heard "American Girls" on the radio I got a little worried. Don't get me wrong; it was nice to hear new material from Counting Crows. I thought the tune was catchy, but the first few times I heard it the words glossy and commercial came to mind. My prior experience provided hope. I reminded myself that as a general rule, the first single released by Counting Crows is never a great barometer for the rest of an album, and I couldn't have been more right.
