WASHINGTON -- Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, has told American interrogators that he first discussed the plot with Osama bin Laden in 1996 and that the original plan called for hijacking five commercial jets on each U.S. coast before it was modified several times, according to interrogation reports reviewed by The Associated Press.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. -- Hurricane Isabel plowed into North Carolina's Outer Banks with 100 mph winds and pushed its way Thursday up the Eastern Seaboard, weakening to a tropical storm by evening but not before swamping roads and knocking out power to more than 2.5 million people.

Kelley School program ranked 12th in the nation

The Wall Street Journal has ranked IU's Kelley School of Business's MBA program 12th in the nation. The ranking, released Wednesday, is part of the publication's annual survey rating business schools across the country. This year's announcement moves the program up from 14th place in 2002 and 23rd in 2001.

Team kicks off fall season at UM

The men's golf team kicks off its fall season this weekend with the Northern Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich. hosted by the University of Michigan. The Hoosiers had three weeks to prepare for the two-day, 15-team event, and they are eager to finally get the season under way at the U of M golf course.

Conference play begins this weekend

The Hoosiers open the Big Ten play this weekend as they travel to Madison, Wisc., to take on the Badgers Friday night. Then they travel to Minneapolis on Sunday to face the Golden Gophers. After a good week of practice, Coach Mick Lyon said he's excited about beginning Big Ten play this weekend. Sophomore forward Kristen Zmijewski said the team is anticipating two tough games.

Fall debut to show preparation

The IU women's golf team will travel to East Lansing, Mich., this weekend for their first tournament of the year, the Mary Fossum Invitational. The first and second rounds begin Saturday at the Forest Akers West Golf Club, with the final round concluding on Sunday.

IU seeks third tourney win

This weekend the IU women's volleyball team will be hosting its second home tournament of the season, the IU Credit Union Invitational. This year marks the third time the Hoosiers (4-4) have hosted the event, and the team is a perfect 6-0 in the tournament's history, capturing the title on both occasions.

Regional rival Kentucky visits Memorial Stadium Saturday

In his second year at IU, coach Gerry DiNardo has yet to lead the football team to consecutive victories. But that could change when the Hoosiers play host to Kentucky 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium after beating Indiana State 33-3 last weekend. A win would secure bragging rights in one of IU's fiercest regional rivalries. "When coach DiNardo came in last year, he wasn't really sure about the rivalry," senior wide receiver Glenn Johnson said. "He didn't really know the meaning of it, but then when he saw how those guys played, he bought into it, and he saw where it was coming from, as far as it being a pretty intense game and you gotta go out and lay it all on the field against Kentucky."
