Bloomington music legend dies at 53

The Bloomington music scene lost one of its greatest contributors when Tom Donahue passed away Wednesday from complications from liver cancer. He would have been 54 next week. Donahue had been a staple of the Bloomington music scene for more than 25 years, working in several music stores, and finally settling as owner of TD's CDs & LPs on Kirkwood Avenue.

Committee meets to discuss city's Park and Ride program

The City of Bloomington's Planning Department held its final public meeting Wednesday regarding the Park and Ride program. The meeting was held to share survey results on the usage of the program and open the floor for suggestions before the staff makes final recommendations on the changes to be implemented in the service.

Book probes Indiana black history

For much of her professional career, history professor Emma Lou Thornbrough has been interested in black history. As a result of her research, Thornbrough published "Indiana Blacks in the Twentieth Century" in 2000.

A presentation by the Asian Culture Center will focus on the national dance of the Philippines, "Tinikling." The dance imitates the movement of the tinikling birds as they walk between grass stems, run over tree branches, or dodge bamboo traps set by rice farmers.

Freshman makes impact

This year, the women's swimming and diving team has a certain swimmer who has the potential that college teams are always looking for. Leila Vaziri, who has become one of the team's star swimmers this year, is a freshman from Coral Springs, Fla. Vaziri has been really consistent this year in many of the team's relays and she has been someone that the team can count on.

I strongly urge the University to invest in a system that would prevent malicious fire alarm pulls. This may not seem like a serious issue to IU students who live outside the residence halls, but in fact, the alarms are so detrimental to the sleep of dormitory residents that they have an adverse effect on academic performance.

Gay marriage a civil right

And it looks as if the day has almost arrived. On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled 4-3, striking down the state's ban on same-sex marriages. And what a step it was. Taking the reigns away from the state of Vermont, who in 1999 allowed for same-sex "civil unions," the state of Massachusetts ruled that such a title "falls short of marriage."

Best Buy opens in Bloomington

Electronic super store Best Buy will open its 18th Indiana location in Bloomington Friday. The opening will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony along with a check presentation of $10,000 from Best Buy to the Monroe County United Way. "We are glad to be opening our doors to Bloomington," said Mendi Boss, Bloomington Best Buy's General Manager. "We plan to give our customers the ultimate shopping experience." The opening of Best Buy could help Bloomington's economy by providing more than 100 jobs, but it will also provide to the community. The money given to the Monroe County United Way will go to a campaign supporting children's issues.

Community discusses gay marriage case

Members of the IU community are discussing yet another controversial issue after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled against a ban on same-sex marriage Tuesday. The ruling could make Massachusetts the first state in the U.S. to possibly legalize same-sex marriage.
