I-69 drives Indiana

·

Listen up, I-69 detractors! Every week it's something new. There's no end to the litany of complaints to the I-69 corridor between Indianapolis and Evansville. It's time to get off your high horses and understand that the infrastructure improvements being made are for the long-term benefit of this state.

Failing Indiana students

The grades have been given, and the report cards are out. In its biannual "Measuring Up" report, the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education graded each state on a series of indicators regarding the accessibility of post-secondary education for their respective residents. But while other states might be scampering home to show their parents the results, Indiana has proven to only be "average" in the categories of preparation (the quality of high school education), participation (the percentage of young people in school) and benefits (the amount that graduates contribute to the economy). Worst of all, Indiana has failed in the affordability category. In fact, the state hasn't experienced a change in affordability since 1992.

A reason to run

·

For most people, a deep breath of fresh air and a walk outside is often taken for granted. Not for Pamela Warren, a cancer survivor who walked outside for the first time in six months Saturday morning in the one-mile family event at the seventh annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer run. Warren was diagnosed in the fourth stage of large-cell lymphoma cancer. During her six-month battle, she walked three miles a week on the Bloomington YMCA's indoor track. Three weeks ago, Warren completed her chemotherapy, and she found out recently she is cancer-free. Her husband, daughter and friends walked with her to celebrate on the sunny morning. More than 4,000 people and pets participated in the one-mile children's race, one-mile family walk and 5K run/walk. Some finished the race with their children in strollers or toted them through the course in red wagons. Friends and lovers held hands, hugged, laughed and cried at the finish on the turf of Memorial Stadium. John Haury, chair of the Hoosiers Outrun Cancer steering committee, said Saturday marked the largest participation in the history of the race.

4 seconds answered

·

Four seconds. In the words of immortal actor Al Pacino, four seconds is a lifetime. In a life's length, then, the Hoosiers' questions were unanswered. Did they leave too few seconds on the clock? Would the snap be flawless? Would the hold be firm? Would the kick fit between the uprights?
