Illinois loss is a reality check, not a nightmare

James Hardy’s body language said it all. Late in the third quarter, after one of IU’s 10 failed third-down conversions, Hardy ripped his chinstrap off. He stood with his hands on his hips staring in disbelief into the distance at yet another broken play. He was a 6-foot-7 symbol of frustration.

Hoosiers split games in road trip to Columbus

After a 2-1 loss to Ohio State in Columbus on Friday, the IU field hockey team responded quickly with an 8-0 win over Missouri State on Saturday. The Hoosiers had little time to dwell on the defeat and showed no ill-effect in their dominant victory less than 24 hours later.

Groups to try building rafts out of cardboard, duct tape

Soggy cardboard and duct tape will be thrown into the IU Outdoor Pool this Friday, in hopes that it will function as a boat and get two people across the body of water. The event is called the Cardboard Boat Regatta, and it is the Council for Advancing Student Leadership’s sole fundraiser.

IU student body presidents hold video conference

The All University Student Association held its first video conference Friday. The association serves as the liaison between student governments on all IU campuses, and its board of directors consists of the student body presidents on each IU campus.

Students start new independent record label

When IU juniors Matt Garbis and Frank Kalman met, they found they had one thing that would ultimately bring them together: music. The two decided to start a record label, Hoosier Daddy Entertainment Group, for students that offers recording, managing, booking and promotion for free.

Student EMTs provide care at campus events

If someone gets hurt at a large campus event, there’s a good chance that student Emergency Medical Technicians will be there to help. IU Emergency Medical Service, a group of students who are trained as EMT-Basics and first aid personnel, provide medical care to victims of major or minor accidents at various campus events.

McRobbie: Emergency alert system will be in place by end of calendar year

I don’t want to die. But every day the Grim Reaper puts his ominously huge sickle to my young, supple neck and warns, “This day may be your last.” He says this to me because I ride around Bloomington on my bicycle. Whether the danger comes from people in 4000-lb. machines, such as SUVs and vans, who pass me too closely, oblivious pedestrians on cell phones who don’t look both ways before they cross the street or other cyclists ignorant to the rules of the road, death looms around every corner.

For many students in Bloomington, including myself, IU is the No. 1 college in America. It has the best professors. It has the fairest admission standards. It has the greatest diversity. It has some of the best academic programs in the nation. To us, it is all of these things because it is our university, and we have become attached to it. The U.S. News and World Report, however, disagrees with our perceptions. Its annual college rankings place universities in order of best to worst in certain areas related to academia, and it seems the Report has given IU the cold shoulder.
