With over 1,000 performances annually and multiple performance locations across Bloomington, the Jacobs School of Music is a great place to get your fix of musical and artistic events at Indiana University.
Jacobs has frequently been ranked as a top 10 music school nationally and internationally. They have many degree programs and opportunities for students, but they also host many events and performances every year for students and community members to enjoy. Here are some of the upcoming events to check out at Jacobs this fall.
Recitals
On Sept. 2, there will be a faculty/guest recital featuring four artists, including Daniel Cueto, a professor of music theory for Jacobs who composed the recital and plays flute. Alongside him will be Senior Lecturer in Jacobs Kimberly Carballo on piano, and Pei-San Chiu, an adjunct associate professor of music in flute at Jacobs, and guest musician Eric Bowling, from Bloomington Symphony Orchestra on flute.
The recital will be from 5-6 p.m. in Auer Hall. This and many other Jacobs performances can also be viewed online from their streaming site live@jacobs.
Returning to campus from 4-5 p.m. Sept. 6 is the Meet Me at the Metz Carillon Series. The Metz Carillon Tower is the 91-foot bell tower located in the Cox Arboretum on campus. The event is a free recital of students and faculty playing a wide range of music on the Carillon, an instrument consisting of at least 23 bells arranged in a chromatic sequence. IU’s Carillon contains 65 bells in the tower.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to the Arboretum to enjoy the recital. Tours of the tower are also typically offered after the performances. The recital is an ongoing series and usually takes place on Sundays at the same time.
Another faculty recital will happen from 8-10 p.m. Sept. 10 at Auer Hall, featuring Brandon Vamos, a professor of practice in cello at Jacobs. Vamos will be performing the cello. This performance will also be available on live@jacobs.
Orchestra performances
The IU Philharmonic Orchestra will participate in Jacobs Live at the Movies, where they will perform the soundtrack of Disney’s “Frozen” live alongside the movie. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at the IU Auditorium and for a second time at 2 p.m. Sept. 13. Ticket prices range from $26 to $76.
At 6 p.m. Sept. 13, Switchyard Park will host an evening with the IU Jacobs School of Music Symphony Orchestra. The show will be conducted by guest conductor Fawzi Haimor, who is the newly appointed music director of the Marin Symphony Orchestra in California.
Opera and Ballet
The opera “The Cook-Off," created by Shawn E. Okpebholo and Mark Campbell, will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 and 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Musical Arts Center. The opera portrays chefs competing in a televised cooking competition making macaroni and cheese and is meant to reveal a deeper truth about food, culture and history.
The fall ballet will take place at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 and at both 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Musical Arts Center. The program will include four different performances created by both faculty members and choreographers such as George Balanchine, James Whiteside and Caili Quan.
