Local resident teaches about Japanese music

Last weekend about 100 people had the chance to "visit Japan." Bloomington resident Molly Atkins Jeon and her teacher Baisho Matsumoto performed 16th century Japanese folk music as part of the musical program "A Visit to Japan" at the John Waldron Arts Center auditorium.

Making IU beautiful

Dave Hurst has kept a file of thank you notes close to his desk for the past 11 years. But they aren't for scholarship recommendations, although he has written his share. The file makes for a remarkable history album of IU's development. The thank you notes are from faculty, staff, students and parents writing to thank Hurst and his colleagues for a beautiful campus. As Campus Division Manager, Hurst is part of an on-going effort to keep the campus aesthetically pleasing to the eyes of visitors and residents.

'Echoes of Blue'

NEW YORK -- The painting is beautiful to see -- an orange-striped curtain hangs from a wood pole above a shimmering ocean -- but the title "Separation" hints at another meaning. The curtain painted by Shahla Etemadi represents those put up in Caspian Sea swimming spots in Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution to keep men and women separate. The painting is a part of "Echoes in Blue," an exhibition of contemporary Iranian artists on view through April 29 at The National Arts Club.

Country star Felice Bryant dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Felice Bryant, who with her late husband wrote "Bye Bye Love" and other Everly Brothers hits and the hand-clapping bluegrass standard "Rocky Top," died Tuesday. She was 77.

Jazz great Nina Simone dies in France

NEW YORK -- Nina Simone, whose deep, raspy, forceful voice made her a unique figure in jazz and later helped define the civil rights movement, died Monday at her home in France, according to her personal manager. She was 70.

Funnyman Ferrell gets 'serious' about marathon

BOSTON --Will Ferrell arrives on time at a tapas restaurant on trendy Newbury Street, not far from the finish line of the Boston Marathon. He's dressed to run, wearing jogging shoes and ankle socks, a windbreaker and black Lycra tights that show how thin his legs have gotten since he began training for the 26.2-mile distance.

Audience to vote on first 'Hoosier Idol' today

Madonna retools 'American Life' video for TV

NEW YORK -- Madonna's "American Life" video has been reincarnated as a tamer, nonviolent version of its former self. The performer scrapped the original version because she thought its violent, antiwar themes were inappropriate during the U.S.-led conflict in Iraq.

Hip-hop dance group performs last show of the season

IU Essence will be performing for the last time this school year at the Black Student Union's fashion show at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The dance team performs at different venues throughout the school year, the most recent being the Faculty and Staff for Student Excellence Mentoring Program's annual banquet and awards ceremony.
