California trip unsuccessful for IU

The women's volleyball team returned home from California Sunday with one win and two losses to add to their record, now 2-4, after playing three matches in the Loyola Marymount Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday. The Hoosier's beginning match Friday evening against host Loyola Marymount was a strong start for IU, who won the first game of the match against the Lions.

Divers place at nationals

Divers Erin Quinn, a senior, and Sara Reiling, a junior, continued a spectacular week for the Hoosier diving program by finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, at the U.S. Nationals Sunday. Both earned spots on the national team as a result.

Team sponsors invitational for 3 opponents

After a tie and two overtime losses to Michigan earlier this season, revenge is on the mind of the water polo team as it plays host to a four-team field at the Indiana Invitational at Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center this weekend. Michigan State is first on IU's agenda at 1 p.m Saturday, followed by a date with No. 18 Massachusetts at 7:30 p.m. In the final match of the invitational, the No. 17 Hoosiers (13-7-1) take on No. 13 Michigan (14-9-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Track conditions play role in quals

Timing is everything during qualifications for Little 500, and it has nothing to do with a stop watch. The time that each rider is vying for is more than a race time. The time of day that each team competes is important because it could have an influence upon their speed and track times.

Football team's 2nd scrimmage leaves room for improvement

Much like the hot and cold weather plaguing central Indiana, the Hoosier football team had highs and lows during their second scrimmage of the spring season. "It went good and OK," senior wide receiver Antwaan Randle El said. "We didn't play as well as we wanted on offense, and we still have some things that need to be corrected on defense, but overall we stayed with it and near the end made some big plays."

Wizards sign top draft picks

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards signed first-round draft pick Jared Jeffries on Wednesday. The 6-foot-11, 215-pound Jeffries was the 11th overall pick in last month's draft.

Junior wants to win it all again

Hoosiers not on TV

After seasons of constant television coverage, the men's basketball team will take a hit this season. And we have the economy to thank, IU Media Relations Director Jeff Fanter said. Seven of IU's first 12 games - including two exhibition contests - will not be televised. Sunday's exhibition victory against Athletes in Action was the first. Other games that will not be televised include Nike Elite, Charlotte, Southern Illinois, Ball State and both Hoosier Classic contests. IU's game against Miami of Florida will be broadcast regionally on the Sunshine Network.

Hoosiers optimistic for new season

Interpreted word for word, the women's soccer team's goal for the 2001 season may not seem profound. But coach Joe Kelley maintains that if his team plays its hardest, the Hoosiers can expect an improvement on last year's 8-9-1 record. "It may sound so trite, but we just want to play really well. Every game we want to compete," Kelley said. "We want to go out and play with pride and outwork the other team. Beyond that obviously we're judged by wins and losses. It would be great if things fell our way, but we've got to make our breaks."

Hoosiers aim for revenge against No. 9 Badgers tonight

The IU women's basketball team reviewed game video of themselves after practice Tuesday instead of examining the Wisconsin squad on tape. Coach Kathi Bennett said she would rather expend her energy worrying about her own team than fretting about the Badgers.

Overtime games lead to mixed results

The women's soccer team finished a weekend road trip in which it went into overtime twice, defeating Xavier 1-0 Sunday, after falling to Notre Dame 2-1 Friday.

Decision time for top recruits

IU is expected to officially land three men's basketball recruits today, the first day recruits can sign national letters of intent. Six-foot-three, 186-pound Bracey Wright (The Colony, Texas) verbally committed to the Hoosiers in September after averaging 21.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, three assists and two steals per game for the Cougars.

Senior sets goals, leads team

This is the last year for senior Erin Womble on the women's cross country team, and she doesn't want the disappointment the team experienced last year. Then, the Hoosiers were on the bubble of making it to the NCAA meet. This year, Womble said she looks to head to Greenville, South Carolina, site of this year's NCAA's. She looks past last year's frustration and sees a positive. "We were on the bubble and almost there. Now we think, 'What can we do?' Everyone was let down, and we don't want that feeling again," she said.

As a fifth-year senior, Rich Thomas has seen a lot of twists and turns in his golf career. So it probably should have come as no surprise that he ended up becoming golfing buddies with none other than Principal Belding of "Saved by the Bell" this summer. But you better not call him Screech. "I'd rather be called Zack or Slater," Thomas joked.

Team takes sixth in conference tourney

With a 292 second round score that moved them from seventh to third place Friday, the Hoosiers were primed to make a run for their eighth Big Ten Championship. But unfavorable playing conditions struck throughout the weekend and the team quickly fell in the standings to sixth place.

Intramural sports begin in July

Even during summer sessions, students can participate in intramural sports sponsored by the Division of Recreational Sports. Registration for two of these sports, tennis and whiffleball, takes place Tuesday and Wednesday. Participants can register at the SRSC in room 115, or at the HPER Wildermuth. Whiffleball teams will begin playing July 1. "There will be pool play; it's broken down into three weeks of pool play, and then it goes into bracket play," said Brad Logar, a graduate assistant for Intramurals. "Every team makes the playoffs."

Roadrunners hang on to capture race

On Lap 93 of the 100-lap race, Kappa Alpha Theta senior Krissy Johnson took the exchange, hopped on her Mongoose bicycle and built a quarter of a lap lead on the three other teams that remained on the lead lap: Roadrunners, Kappa Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta. But when Johnson needed her legs, on the final lap's back-straightaway, she could not make up the half a straightaway lead that Roadrunner sophomore Jenn Wangerin had built to win the 14th running of the women's Little 500.
