Hoosiers advance to Elite Eight

While most of the IU student body feasted on food during the Thanksgiving break, the No. 2-seeded IU men's soccer team stayed in Bloomington and gobbled up Wolverines and Eagles. The Hoosiers defeated Michigan Tuesday, 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and Boston College Sunday, 1-0.

IU places 30th at Nationals

The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute was a sloppy, wet and muddy mess Monday. As the IU women's cross country team ran the course's two three-kilometer loops in the NCAA Championship meet, mud caked their spikes and legs. Rain from the preceding weekend riddled the course with slippery spots.

The men's cross country team finished its season one week ago at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute. The team finished 18th overall, the third straight top 25 finish for the Hoosiers. IU placed 12th last year.

Hoosiers beat in-state rivals Indiana St. by 4

Indiana State almost did it a third time in a row. Trailing by three in the waning seconds, ISU's David Moss looked for the tying basket, but a Marshall Strickland steal off Moss' pass prevented ISU's tying opportunity while stopping the Sycamores two-game winning streak against the Hoosiers with a 56-52 IU victory.

Hoosiers defeat Wolverines; face Boston College Sunday

IU coach Mike Freitag stressed all season the team's need to finish games. IU sophomore forward Kevin Robson finished the game for the No. 2 seed Hoosiers by scoring the game's lone goal versus IU's Big Ten rival, Michigan, in the match's 87th minute.

Bucket Bashing

WEST LAFAYETTE -- The Hoosier football team suffered a spanking in the Old Oaken Bucket game Saturday as IU gave up 763 yards of total offense in a 63-24 thrashing at the hands of arch-rival Purdue. With the loss, the Hoosiers end a disappointing 2004 campaign at 3-8 and 1-7 in the Big Ten.

Repeat championship run starts against Michigan

NEW YORK -- Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season Sunday as the NBA came down hard on three members of the Indiana Pacers for fighting with fans as a game against the Detroit Pistons degenerated into a melee.

Season begins with loss to No. 8 Baylor

Halfway through the second half, the IU women's basketball team was in position to pull off an upset against No. 8 Baylor University, trailing only 39-34. Instead of making a run, the ice-cold shooting that had plagued IU all night continued, developing into a 60-47 loss to the Lady Bears.

Instead, what they got was an old-fashioned beat down and a long ride back to Bloomington following a 63-24 loss to the Boilermakers at Ross-Ade Stadium in front of 65,137 fans.

NEW YORK - Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season Sunday as the NBA came down hard on three members of the Indiana Pacers for fighting with fans as a game against the Detroit Pistons degenerated into a melee. Nine players from the teams were banned for a combined 143 games, including some of the harshest penalties the league has ever issued. Artest is the first player to be suspended for nearly an entire season for a fight during a game.

INDIANAPOLIS -- If Peyton Manning has proved anything this season, it is that nothing is out of reach. He's already thrown five touchdowns in an NFL-record three games this season. He's thrown at least three TD passes six times and is on pace to shatter Dan Marino's seemingly untouchable single-season record of 48 TD passes.

Owners delay Expos vote

CHICAGO -- Major League Baseball owners surprisingly did not vote Thursday on the proposed move of the Montreal Expos to Washington D.C. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he still expected the move to take place, and said owners will vote on the deal by Dec. 6.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Lou Holtz will retire as coach at South Carolina after the season, The Associated Press learned Thursday night, apparently paving the way for Steve Spurrier to replace him. Holtz told his team before Thursday's practice that he was retiring, according to a source close to the program who spoke on condition of anonymity. All season, the 67-year-old Holtz said he was worn out and tired, and even said Spurrier would be a good choice to succeed him.

Hoosiers welcome Kentucky, Utah for Invitational After dropping one spot in the national polls, the No. 14-ranked IU men's swimming and diving team will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing loss by participating in the ninth annual Indiana Invitational. The Invitational, which will take place at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center from today through Sunday, is a 10-team competition.

2 teams, 1 great rivalry

On the wall hangs a clock that resembles something out of a "Mission Impossible" movie, counting down the seconds until the clash with the Boilermakers.

One last hurrah for some
