Costello shows musical direction with 'North'

·

Whether out of boredom or creative restlessness, Elvis Costello has spent the last decade reinventing himself. Every year or two he's popped up wearing a new mask, playing the part of an R&B crooner ("Kojak Variety"), a classical composer (The Juliet Letters) or a lounge stylist (Painted From Memory).

The Limpest Bizkit yet

·

First of all, why is the new trend whining rock stars? You're a ROCK STAR. What do you POSSIBLY have to whine about?!

Still more human than human

·

At the very least, Rob Zombie deserves credit for being true to himself. His creepy rock has not always been the most popular music on the market, but it's what he believes in producing and he hasn't changed it for anybody in the past 20 years.

Bangles bungle comeback album

·

To understand this review, one should know a little about me. I love pop music. I have no problem nor do I even possess any kind of aversion to pop hooks, vocal harmonies, catchy lyrics or songs about love and whatnot.

Why two is better than one

·

Andre "3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton took rap music to a level that not even the godfathers of rap could ever imagine. It was 1994 when these rap artists busted onto the scene with their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.

The sun shines dimly in Tuscany

·

The theme of Under the Tuscan Sun is universal. The film shows the viewer that there is life after suffering a great loss. Most importantly, it exhibits the significance of taking chances, allowing the rest to fall into place.

Unfortunately, Must-See TV isn't becoming a joke

·

As the opener for the final season of "Friends," I was expecting an episode packed with back-to-back laughs. Though there were moments of typical "Friends" hilarity (Monica's experience with cornrows and Ross's extreme reaction to the "shampoo explosion" in his suitcase), the script seemed stretched.

'Duplex' built on shaky foundation

·

Built on a slightly shaky foundation, Duplex does have its funny moments, but overall it's a fixer upper. Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore star as Alex and Nancy, a couple who move into this seemingly perfect duplex in Brooklyn.

Time to Spin

·

Deep in a jumble of overflowing crates of records, two turntables and a mixer, tangled black and white wires and three hijacked computer speakers, Bloomington DJ Tom Slick is nevertheless completely in control of the beat.

RIGHT SIDE DOWN MOVES UP

·

Every band starts from the beginning, with local recognition usually being the initial step of success. However, most bands get filtered out in the process of ascending the industry hierarchy, and few are fortunate enough to experience anything beyond the local music scene.

EVEN IF IT'S TOO LATE FOR THE TEAM...

·

Rumor has it that IU tailgates don't live up to those found on other Big Ten campuses like Purdue or Michigan. A close friend from high school might tell you, "Man, we had the most out of control tailgate last weekend! I can't remember the last time I had so much fun at the game!"

Turnovers top Hoosier priorities

·

During the Michigan game week, forcing turnovers was the emphasis, according to senior Joe Gonzalez. And the Hoosiers accomplished that mission as they forced four in the first half but were unable to take any away from the Wolverines in the second. Gonzalez said the challenge is to carry it over to this Saturday's game against Michigan State.

IU field hockey starts with strong defense

·

Last year the IU women's field hockey team ended the season with a record of 6-13. After just seven games this year, the Hoosiers have almost already equaled their total wins as the team is currently 5-2. One of the main reasons for the team's success has been its defense.

Preparation is key for cross country team

·

For the IU cross country runners, preparing for competition is just as important as the actual race. The mental buildup before a race is a fine line between getting prepared and not getting too mentally tired.

Underdog Twins take first win

·

NEW YORK - Instead of getting tight when Johan Santana cramped up, the Minnesota Twins stayed loose. Playing a postseason game in Yankee Stadium for the first time, the Twins were guarding a one-run lead in the fifth inning when their pitcher suddenly couldn't go to the mound for the bottom half.

In light of the upcoming awards, I have decided to take my best shot at giving out the League MVPs, Cy Youngs and Manager of the Year awards.

The man behind the puppets of 'Avenue Q'

·

EAST ORANGE, N.J. -- Two stars of the Broadway musical "Avenue Q" await curtain time in an upstairs dressing room. One is animated and expressive, the other more reserved. After a while, meeting the quizzical, orange-eyed gaze of the first feels natural, even though he is little more than a bag of soft, brown fur trimmed with magenta ostrich feathers. Rick Lyon, the man behind the puppet, speaks for both.

·

LOS ANGELES -- Sophia Loren, returning to Hollywood to promote her son's directorial debut, recalled her first visit, which included an infamous encounter with Jayne Mansfield. To welcome Italy's top star, Paramount Studios invited a stellar crowd to a reception in 1958 at Romanoff's, the town's toniest restaurant.
