Pat McGee Band electrifies Bluebird crowd

Sounds of the acoustic guitar, drums, basses and amazing vocals echoed throughout the Bluebird Nightclub, 216 N. Walnut St., Tuesday night as Pat McGee Band took center stage.

Sweet charity

Red and white balloons waved back and forth in the air, hovering over tables covered in white cloths. A line of adults and students wound around the outer walls, as each visitor got his or her hand stamped with a heart, signifying they had paid for the sweet treats they were about to sample. As children ran back and forth -- on a perpetual sugar high -- a band played the song "Hey Good Lookin'" from the front center of the room at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave.

High schools join dramatic forces

In what is being publicized as a "historic event," the fourth production of the John Waldron Arts Center Theater Series 2000-2001 will be a joint effort by the drama departments of Bloomington High Schools North and South. It is the first time students of both schools will perform together on the same stage. Two Depression-era plays by American playwright Clifford Odets will be presented, "Waiting For Lefty" and "Awake and Sing." The performances will run 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16, 17, 23 and 24; and 2 p.m. Feb. 25.

IU should buy Von Lee theater

Some faculty members have requested the University purchase the now-defunct Von Lee movie theater from its current owner, Kerasotes, The Associated Press reported. The faculty members want to use the theater to show films for classes and conferences.

Taken out with the trash

My eyes burning will probably be the one thing I never forget. I'm not sure if there is any pain like it. It's tough to put into words how it felt, but I can tell you one thing: it really hurt.

New avenues of exploitation

All that holiday hubbub on the Internet, television, magazines and even here at the IDS made me feel sorry for those poor little holidays that get overlooked. Flag Day, for example. Brockovich shines

\"Erin Brockovich" is the true story of a struggling single mother without any legal training who discovered water pollution in Hinkley, Calif. She then heralded the townspeople to fight against a large corporation and won the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in the United States, $330 million. Although this would easily be made into another "A Civil Action," the mesmerizing cast, masterful direction and witty script make "Brockovich" extremely absorbing and entertaining.

Jeffries, Haston to stay put

Interim head coach Mike Davis said forwards Kirk Haston and Jared Jeffries will not enter the NBA draft following this season. NBA draft expert Chris Monter said it's for the better. "They're not going anywhere," Davis said. "They're both having good seasons and when you have good seasons like they're having, things tend to fly around like that." Jeffries, a freshman, said Sunday after IU's 72-59 victory against Michigan that he was considering a jump to the NBA.

Police seek suspect in local shooting

Bloomington police are still looking for the person or persons involved in a Monday evening shooting that ended with a local youth being lifelined to a hospital in Indianapolis. Police believe the victim, who was shot in the right abdomen, is "out of the woods." The victim was lifelined to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis late Monday evening. Police will not disclose the name because the victim is a juvenile. According to police, the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Monday. Police found out about it when the victim, a 16-year-old local youth, was transported to the Bloomington Hospital late that evening.

Coach turning team around

Dorsey Tierney seems organized. Emphasis on the word "seems." For the most part, the women's swimming coach likely is -- she's rebuilt IU's women's swimming program, radiates a hard-working persona and receives praise from her swimmers. But she's a tad disheveled in a few departments. Take her four gold medals, for instance. Most people would put the death grip on those treasures, place them in an air-tight case and put them on display for every Tom, Dick and Harry who happens to stroll by.
