Moore's unfocused message

I saw "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore's controversial polemic against the Bush administration and the real motives behind the war in Iraq. I wasn't impressed. I don't mean I disliked it. Moore makes some good points, which, although fairly obvious, don't get a lot of press, and there is some mildly powerful and interesting footage in the film. It's worth five bucks for a matinee show, but it's just not documentary film at its best.

Avoid a player's eyes

The day was Tuesday. The temperature was unbearable, and I was stuck at a stoplight listening to Avril Lavigne, who was on every station. I thought my day couldn't get worse, and then I listened to the words. Avril Lavigne was chanting my last relationship in cheesy pop form, and since most of America has heard the "Don't Tell Me" tune, I thought, being the goodwill ambassador that I am, I should warn the campus of the man behind the lyrics.

Dancing with national pride

SALAMANCA, Spain -- First, an admission: I didn't realize it was the Fourth of July until 11 p.m. that evening, and it took a drunk Spaniard to remind me. (I'm doing things on European time.) I'm a terrible American. I didn't light any firecrackers, I didn't wear red, white or blue, and I didn't muse on my citizenship until late in the evening. I did, however, go to the bars. Yes, it was a Sunday, but I went to church that morning, so it balanced. Praying, shoe-shopping and drinking constitute the Spanish triathlon.

Ashton dorm to house fraternity

The Weatherly wing in Ashton Quad has been vacant this summer, but a recent agreement with Kappa Sigma fraternity will have the building full again in the fall. "(The fraternity) approached us about the possibility of living as groups in our residence hall," said Patrick Connors, executive director of Residential Programs and Services. "We decided that we would use Weatherly for that."

I don't know how the subject of bad days came up in conversation, because I was having anything but a bad day. Perched on a wooden bench on a bluff overlooking the glistening rolls of Lake Erie, I sat with a delightful gentleman enjoying the same seat and view. Among other professions, he told me he is a teacher at a prison in a town south of Cleveland, Ohio. He told me a story that occurred on a test day in one of his classes.

IU student comes in 3rd at Miss Gay Indiana pageant

INDIANAPOLIS -- Returning senior Chris Grooms put on his makeup, donned a wig, zipped on a white Elvis-styled jumpsuit covered in gem stones and stepped onto the Talbott Street Theater stage in Indianapolis Friday as his drag persona Miss Bianca Defy at the 26th annual Miss Gay Indiana USA pageant. Grooms placed third and won the Glamour award in what was his first state pageant. "For his first Miss Indiana pageant, I think he did exceptionally well," said Grooms' roommate and recent IU graduate Andrew Rehrig.

'Twelfth Night' is uniquely entertaining

The young members of the Youth Theatre Ensemble capped off their four-week learning experience with performances of Shakespeare's comedy "Twelfth Night" at the Bloomington Playwrights Project Thursday through Sunday. The cast, ages nine to 15, sparkled with heart and energy, lending a youthful enthusiasm to the well-known words of William Shakespeare.

Mid-summer classic whiffs

Who else out there is not excited about watching the All-Star game? "This time it counts" is the slogan MLB is running for the 2004 showcase. But the real slogan should read: "This time it counts … toward profit margins and TV ratings," because that's the extent of what baseball fans will get in an exhibition game that Commissioner Bud Selig has successfully ruined.

Lee Corso, IU's football coach from 1973-1982, owned a career highlighted by the school's first bowl victory in 75 years, a 38-37 decision over previously unbeaten Brigham Young in the 1979 Holiday Bowl. After 28 years of coaching football, Corso joined ESPN in 1987, where he serves as a game analyst for the Thursday night telecasts and as a studio analyst for College "GameDay" as well as the halftime and scoreboard shows. He also is director of business development for Dixon Ticonderoga in Florida. The following are excerpts from a recent phone interview with the famous coach.
