Boasting more than 20 IU Jacobs School of Music alumni, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performed Sunday at the Musical Arts Center before a packed crowd. The free concert was the symphony's first visit to IU since its show last year, according to a press release.

Disco Biscuits play at Bluebird tonight

·

As Tuesday night dissolves into Wednesday morning, the Disco Biscuits' show will be winding down. But a few years ago, their performance would just be starting up. Once known as a band whose concerts lasted until the sun came up, the Disco Biscuits are maturing.

More of the same... with one local twist

·

Despite encroachment from national chains, two local restaurants each ranked highly in three Best of Bloomington categories. If you are looking for the cream of the crop, try Malibu Grill or Bucceto's Smiling Teeth. These two restaurants tied as Bloomington's Best Restaurant. Malibu Grill was also the Best First Date Restaurant and the Best Place for Dinner with Parents.

Defending Rumsfeld

·

Whatever you think about outgoing Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is wrong. That, at least, is the contrarian conclusion I reached after scanning the press coverage for the past few days. As some were frantically keen for The New York Times to decide what their views would be on this matter, I reached to my bookshelf and pulled down Pentagon analyst Eliot Cohen's essay on democratic leaders in wartime, "Supreme Command."

LGBT editorial wrong on multiple counts The IDS editorial on Nov. 1 ("Sexual preference") was nothing short of offensive to me as a gay man, as a Middlebury College alumnus and admissions employee, and as a former reporter. It was quite clear from the numerous factual errors and thoughtless assumptions that there was not even the slightest interest in investigating the facts surrounding Middlebury College's admissions policies.

16 hairstylists vie for crown, title of 'Hair Apparent'

·

Melanie Graves wove a hodge-podge of music paraphernalia into her daughter's hair Friday. Clad in a sequined dress and go-go boots, IU freshman Marli Haddan wore a three-pound phonograph horn from an antique record player, 45s and disco balls atop a mountain of synthetic hair as Grave's model for Curl Up and Dye for the Arts.

The 'Festival of Lights'

·

The glowing stage was the physical center of the Diwali celebration Saturday night, but the focal point was the exuberant crowd, which at times nearly overpowered the voices of the performers at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Black leaders reject IUPUI's offer

INDIANAPOLIS -- Dissatisfied black student leaders at IU-Purdue University Indianapolis on Sunday night publicly rejected the administration's response to a list of demands the students gave the university last week.

CINCINNATI -- LaDainian Tomlinson tied his career high with four touchdowns, and Philip Rivers threw a touchdown pass under pressure that completed the Chargers' furious rally Sunday for a 49-41 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Colts make history with 9th win

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Just call him Patient Peyton. With Buffalo content to slow down the Indianapolis Colts' up-tempo offense, a restrained Peyton Manning relied on short throws, an effective ground game and a time-consuming final drive to lead the Indianapolis Colts past Buffalo 17-16 on Sunday -- and into the NFL record book.

A fitting farewell for the Hoosier seniors

·

Perhaps it was a cruel joke: On Saturday, the football gods forced IU to play No. 2 Michigan in the Hoosiers' final home game of the season. In the last decade, the Wolverines have played with the Hoosiers like a cat playing with a mouse. Before Saturday's game, Michigan had posted wins against IU in their previous 13 meetings. And perhaps it was only fitting that in the Hoosiers' final game at Memorial Stadium this season, it was Michigan that kept the Hoosiers from breaking their 13-year bowl game drought. The Hoosiers were able to move up and down the field frequently, but as soon as they looked poised to score, the Wolverine with whiskers put its paw down and pounced, delaying the possibility of an IU bowl berth for another game.

Hoosier duo qualifies for nationals race

There's a saying that goes, "You always need to take the positives out of the negatives." This sentiment applied to the IU women's cross country team's performance Saturday.

IU shifts focus to Saturday's game

·

It was almost like Saturday's game at Memorial Stadium didn't even matter. Shortly after the loss to No. 2 Michigan, IU senior center Justin Frye was already counting down to the season finale against in-state rival Purdue.

Defense looks top-notch

·

Both IU men's basketball exhibition games are in the books. Both were blowouts. Both featured a work-in-progress D.J. White and a surprisingly solid Armon Bassett, the backup/counterpart to Earl Calloway. Both displayed the sharp-shooting of junior college transfer Lance Stemler. But what stood out above all else at this early-season juncture was the stifling, hard-nosed defense. Just ask University of Indianapolis coach Todd Sturgeon.
