Thousands feared dead after powerful Haiti quake

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and whole neighborhoods. Officials feared thousands — perhaps more than 100,000 — may have perished but there was no firm count.

Bizarre S.R. 37 accident kills 3

Three are dead after a tragic accident on the Lawrence County-Orange County line. A pickup truck was headed northbound on State Road 37 when a steel coil weighing 44,000 pounds rolled off a southbound semi-truck, crossed into the opposing lane and struck the vehicle.

A new event is being incorporated into the week-long Bid Week celebration for sororities. The Inspiration Rally will be divided into two sessions at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. today  in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union.

The Greek letter organization, Kappa Alpha Psi, first founded at IU, is manifesting service this week on campus. The fraternity, an all-black organization founded in 1911, is having a variety of events this week with the theme “Thee Krimson Renaissance.”

Bloomington man trapped in car

On Sunday morning, 30-year-old Bloomington resident Ryan T. Rene was headed southbound in the 1600 block of Rogers St. when his car slid 100 feet and split a telephone pole in half, said Bloomington Police Department Lt. David Drake.

Man arrested for threat on girlfriend with knives

On Sunday, Bloomington Police arrived at an apartment at the 3100 block of E. Stratum Way. There, a female dialed 911 claiming that her boyfriend, 20-year-old Bloomington resident Tyler Stephen Strother, threatened to kill her with two knives.

GOP candidate Sodrel to run for Congress

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Republican Rep. Mike Sodrel announced Monday he was running again for Congress, setting up a possible fifth consecutive campaign against Democratic Rep. Baron Hill in southern Indiana’s 9th District.Sodrel sent an e-mail to supporters announcing his bid for the Republican nomination, although another GOP candidate plans to argue it’s time for a new person to challenge Hill.

The abroad blues

I know I am not the only person losing a friend to the allure of exotic places and interesting people. We are in college; classmates study abroad all the time. Siblings, significant others and best friends constantly deal with distance. I do not think I am the first person to worry about a relationship shift. So until I can be the one packing my bags for a foreign country, (Buenos Aires, here I come) I will have to figure out a way to come to terms with circumstances out of my control, just like everyone else.
