And as we start our shopping and decorating, there is one thing continuously playing in the background: Christmas carols.  Every year, Christmas carols are anticipated from the traditional classics to the new renditions of today’s famous pop artists.

Holiday crafts benefit Waldron

Thanksgiving weekend marked the beginning of the Holiday Art Mart at the John Waldron Arts Center. Starting last Friday and ongoing through Dec. 23, the Waldron will display holiday gifts crafted by local artists. The Art Mart will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Many churches are taking precautions so the H1N1 virus doesn’t spread through practices like the Holy Eucharist, or communion rite, which churches around campus participate.

City looks for holiday volunteers

As organizations prepare for the holidays, city groups are seeking student volunteers to fill the gaps. Many nonprofit organizations in Bloomington depend on IU student volunteers, and as students head home for the holidays, organizations find themselves without the majority of their workforce, said Bet Savich of the City of Bloomington volunteer network.

Vaccines for H1N1 started getting pumped into students two weeks ago in the stadium where IU’s oh-so-wonderful basketball team plays. Coming in both nasal spray and shot form, many are flocking to get this long-awaited safeguard against the mysterious and sly swine flu. But can it be that this vaccine could do more harm than good?

A rational fear of beards

When I grow up, I’ll make sure my children fear bearded men. Not that there’s anything wrong with bearded men. In fact, I’d like to be one someday. It’s just that I, like every other responsible parent, will want my kids to be on the constant lookout for strangers who might do them harm.

Earlier this month, Time magazine reported on the desire for a momentary flash of fame an attention in a piece titled “Balloon Boy’s Lesson: The New American Dream.” In October, Balloon Boy’s parents surprised us by showing the extent to which one couple would go to find themselves in the national spotlight. And now, the Salahi couple has shown us that lack of discretion and good taste is not unique to a family with a large, silver balloon.

Is it possible for an American to exist “off-the-radar” in a world where people are bound to their cell phones, their laptops, their omniscient social networking devices and ultimately, their virtual identities? I’ll find out soon enough.

IU gets more H1N1 vaccines

IU Bloomington students and employees with H1N1 vaccine reservations for Week 1, Week 2 or Week 3 will vaccinated by Dec. 9, according to an IU press release. The IU Health Center received 8,900 doses last week. People with reservations on other weeks will be immunized as more supplies come in.

Police: 911 tapes of Woods' crash expected Sunday

WINDERMERE, Fla. – Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin, are expected to talk to police for the first time Sunday, breaking a two-day silence that has only fueled speculation about his early morning accident, why he left the house at that hour, where he was going and whether an argument preceded the crash.
