IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack says quite frankly this is Whitney's Thomas's team. The senior and graduate of Blooming North is playing for her third different coach this year but bringing great intensity and purpose to the team. Thomas is also an All-American candidate this year. Thomas is also just 55 rebound away from becoming only the second player in school history to record 1,000 points/1,000 rebound. On Monday Thomas could be playing her last game against Purdue and said she wants to go out on top.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>After four years playing college basketball, senior forward Amber Jackson got to do one thing for the first time in November. She played in front of her mother. She didn’t disappoint Carolyn Jackson either, as she put up 50 points in two games to lead IU to the Hilton Concord Classic championship in Moraga, Calif. She was named MVP of the tournament. Jackson was born on a naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, grew up in California and began her collegiate career at San Jose State. Jackson excelled at San Jose State and led the Western Athletic Conference in points (17.6) and rebounds (9.8) in her sophomore season. Jackson also had the second-best field goal percentage in Division I in 2005. After a coaching change, however, Jackson decided to transfer. IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack got a call from a San Jose State assistant coach about Jackson. “We were excited about what she could bring athletically, but one thing we believe is character first, academics second and then basketball,” Legette-Jack said. “We knew she was a very strong student, and we wanted to make sure her character would blend into our team, and it did perfectly.” Joining a new group of players was a difficult process for Jackson.“I had to get back into the flow of things, a different team, a different program, a different coach, a different conference,” Jackson said. “Definitely it’s been a huge adjustment for me, but I wouldn’t change it.” This season Jackson is part of a senior class that hopes to advance to the NCAA tournament. Legette-Jack said she believes the program is lucky to have Jackson.“I think Amber is probably one of the best post players in the country,” Legette-Jack said. “I honestly do. The things that she can do with her size in small quarters are just unbelievable.”Playing alongside Jackson in the post is senior forward Whitney Thomas, whom she calls her partner in crime.Jackson said she has never played with anyone with as much passion as Thomas, and added Thomas’ hard work ethic motivates her.Thomas said the impact Jackson brings to the team is enormous.“She has been a huge presence inside and has opened up things for the guards and for me as well,” Thomas said. “Every team that we play has to respect her because she can score and do a lot of great things.”Off the basketball court Jackson would like to pursue a master’s degree in athletic administration, but she said she hopes her basketball days aren’t over. Jackson’s sister Angela played for the Washington Mystics in the WNBA in 1998.“I definitely would like to play afterwards and become the best player I can,” she said. “I have aspirations to be a professional basketball player.”

Yesterday the media was in attendance to see the IU women's basketball team go at it on the hardwood. Coach Jack was her usual inspired and yelling self, motivating her players to go hard all the way. Many times while it seamed like she may have been going over the top a thought crossed my mind. She is just doing this because she expects a lot out of her team and believes they can achieve a lot this year. She wants them to keep their edge and not get complacent. On Thursday the Hoosiers will continue their conference schedule by taking on Minnesota on the road, before heading to Penn State for a Sunday contest with the Nittany Lions.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The IU women’s basketball team has started conference play in the Big Ten making a statement – they want to be on the map and recognized for their play. After the Hoosiers 76-54 victory at home against last year’s co-Big Ten Champions the Iowa Hawkeyes it is going to be hard for anyone to ignore the team. The Hoosiers (10-2, 3-0) won their ninth consecutive game and have now won their first three conference games for the first time since the 1997-98 season. The nine straight wins also tied a best for the team since the 1998-99 season. The Hoosiers opened the game on a 9-0 run behind seven points from junior guard Jamie Braun. Braun had lead the way with 19 total points in the game and said it was part of the plan to attack the basket early.“We saw that we had a lot of openings that we could attack the basket,” Braun said. “We knew that would open up things for our posts in the inside later in the game which it ended up doing.”The Hoosiers played in front of 1,913 fans, the most that have shown up all season. When only 506 fans came out for an earlier game against Xavier, IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack expressed some disappointment. After her 101st victory against Iowa, she said she might have overstepped her bounds on the statement, and was glad to see so many in attendances.“Its great that the number has tripled since that statement,” Legette-Jack said. “I hope they come out for all the right reasons. They come out because of the character we display off the court, they come out because what we do in the classroom, and they come out because they really like what they see on the basketball court.”Senior Whitney Thomas did not disappoint the crowd as many came to support her. Thomas, a Bloomington native, entered the game needing nine points to become the 20th player in school history to record 1,000 points. Thomas got eight of them in the first half and only needed the first 15 seconds of the second half to pass the milestone.“It’s definitely a great accomplishment, but it’s a team sport,” Thomas said. “I couldn’t have gotten there without my teammates. They really pushed me to go harder, and that how I got to where I am."Thomas also added 10 rebounds for her league leading 27th double-double. With 82 more rebounds Thomas will become only the second player in school history to total 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. For the Hoosiers it was a team effort and one that they were very proud of.“We want to go far and make a statement, put Indiana on the map,” Thomas said. “Everyone is in it and like Coach Jack said no one wants the credit we just want to win and do well as a team.”
