The IU Cinema will show a special “quote-along” screening of “The Sound of Music” at 4 p.m. Sunday. Attendees of the screening are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters and sing or talk along to the movie as it is playing. This screening marks the fifth-annual quote-along organized at the cinema.

The 13th Annual Bloomington Christmas Sing-Along will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Trinity Reformed Church. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and there will be cookies and hot cocoa following the sing-along. The event is family-friendly and open to the community.

Straight No Chaser, the IU-born a cappella group, will return to the IU Auditorium at 8 p.m. Dec. 13 for the bicentennial celebration. Along with the unveiling of an official bicentennial song commissioned by IU, the nine-man group will feature its newly released EP.

The year is coming to a close, and with its end comes the ever-present specter of finals. To alleviate the burdens of studying, students are welcome to attend any or all of the upcoming screenings at the IU Cinema this month. With 18 events before the end of the semester, there are plenty of opportunities to escape the cold and enjoy musicals, action films, arthouse classics and more.

As the school semester comes to a close, the month of December presents an array of concerts in Bloomington. This includes the musical stylings of the a cappella group Straight No Chaser; an intimate guitarist and singer from Indiana, Ross David; a local Black Sabbath cover band called Hole in the Sky and Laura Stevenson, an alternative singer hailing from New York.

The early 1970s was a time of great experimentation on college campuses. Fittingly, the College of Arts and Sciences at IU offered an experimental curriculum department. Through it, students could present ideas for an original course with department support from the dean and other professors for final approval.

On Nov. 22 in 1899, beloved Hoosier and a prominent songwriter Hoagland Howard “Hoagy” Carmichael was born. IU honored his birthday with a concert at noon Nov. 21 in Morrison Hall.

For the past 10 years the Venue Fine Art & Gifts has showcased an abundance of artistic creations including jewelry, ceramics, soaps and paintings. Until Nov. 30, this collection will also include the colorful floral paintings of artist Jody Hemphill Smith.
