IU students and the people of Bloomington gathered Sunday evening to celebrate the year of the dragon at the “Dragon Brings Fortune, Together We Paint the New Spring” Lunar New Year gala hosted by the IU Chinese Students and Scholars Association. The event, held in the IU Auditorium, was open to the public and free for all to attend.

The stage was set, the smell of food lingered in the air, and 90’s jams filled the room as the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center (NMBCC) and the Black Film Center & Archive hosted a karaoke night with the theme of Black movie soundtracks at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in the Grand Hall of the NMBCC building.

On Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27, Sheng Wang, an L.A. stand-up comedian, performed four sold out shows at The Comedy Attic. As people walked out of the previous show, they told the next guests about Wang’s performance, saying he was great and funny, and warning that their stomachs would hurt from laughing so much.

North Carolinian country artist, Kameron Marlowe, performed his songs to an incredibly resilient crowd. On Sunday, Jan. 21, fans waited outside The Bluebird Nightclub, shivering in line as they waited to be let in to attend the show, which is part of the Kameron Marlowe: I Can Lie Tour.

For the past three years, Freezefest — Bloomington’s only winter festival — has put on different winter activities, such as ice skating, ice sculpting and cookie decorating. During three consecutive days and for the fourth year in a row, the festival took place this past week from Jan. 18 to Jan. 20 at The Mill and Upland Brewing Company.

About a year ago, Daixuan Ai, a doctoral composition student at the Jacobs School of Music, had just read about a racially motivated attack on an IU freshman in the New York Times. An 18-year-old Asian student was getting off a Bloomington transit bus Jan. 11, 2023, when Billie R. Davis, a 56-year-old Bloomington woman, rushed at her and stabbed her seven times in the head, leaving visible puncture marks. Davis told authorities she had stabbed the student because she was Asian.

In her newest novel, “The Waters,” Bonnie Jo Campbell writes of an island in Michigan where women will face constant hardships against the people living in a nearby town. At 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10, in Morgenstern’s Bookstore and Café, Campbell answered questions about her book and signed copies for readers.

This month, the IU Cinema, The Bishop Bar and The Bluebird Nightclub are just a few venues that have lineups of various movie screenings and performances by talented musicians and skilled poets.

The stairs down to The Orbit Room lead songwriters and audience members to a place of togetherness, where music is a tool for open expression and community. On Dec. 6, local musicians Shaun McDermott and Pablo Fuentes co-hosted the second anniversary of the club they co-founded in 2021, the Cosmic Songwriters Club.

The Bloomington Alternative Media Festival will have their annual festival celebrating independent publishing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Harmony School. The festival is made up of local artists and will feature comics, books and zines.
