Well I finally had some time to sit down and write after Pit Stop and spring break, so here is what I did last week!
Jealous of everyone on vacay in Panama City- getting burnt by the sun, paying well over the normal price for a motel by the beach and living out some MTV wet t-shirt fantasy? NO!
Last Monday night, Cursive and local band Good Luck played a sold-out show at The Bishop. I arrived late, unfortunately missing Good Luck and squeezed into a spot on the left hand side of the stage.
Go back 15 years and you have the birth of Cursive, an indie rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. This mid-western city may seem like an odd place for bands to get their start, but with Saddle Creek Records signing bands like Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley and Toyko Police Club it all makes sense. Cursive would eventually sign to the label and release six full-length albums, each which produced new sounds, new themes and new concepts.
Monday's Caucus Bus Tour kick-started the 10th annual Hip-Hop Awareness Week, run by the IU Hip Hop Congress chapter and derived from its international grassroots organization. The 4 pillars of hip-hop are DJing, MCing, Graffiti, and Breaking, and that's how the events are divided and united.
I wish that I knew about this event earlier. Hip Hop Caucus and Repower America have come together to bring you The Hip Hop Caucus Bus Tour, and Bloomington is one of six stops. Schedule via Facebook event: 3 p.m.
*Due to a family emergency, Balmorhea has canceled some tour dates including Bloomington. But you should still read all about 'em (Pronounced Bal-Moray) In 2009, acoustic instrumental group Balmorhea released All is Wild, All is Silent, a beautifully-crafted album inspired by the letters of early settler William B Dewees.
Surfer Blood is a band of four dudes (who don't surf) from Florida that have done a good job cultivating the laid back party/drug/cool kid image that is catching on these days (see Girls). If the washed out Polaroid on their MySpace doesn't convince you of this, maybe the tagline "Condoleezza Rice, secretary of weed" right next to the picture will. Back in October of last year I reviewed two concerts for The Live Buzz; Neon Indian and Kurt Vile.

Jens at the Secretly Canadian headquarters, photo via the label's twitter I first found out that I couldn't attend Jens Lekman's New Year's Eve show in Chicago, I was pretty heart-broken.
Okay, you've recovered from your New Year's hangover, you're down to the last of the holiday leftovers, and yet you still have more than a week before classes start up again -- what's a person to do?

Everyone keeps asking me what I'm doing for New Year's. Being the spontaneous girl that I am, my calendar has yet to be filled.
2009 and awesome live music in Bloomington went together like reality TV and crazy people. As editor of Live Buzz, I've compiled some of my favorite posts and features below for your reading pleasure.
It's end of the year time and for all of us in the music blog business that means we gather our notes from the year and semi-arbitrarily rank music in top ten lists.
