A look at rebounding numbers

According to freshman forward Derek Elston, coach Crean told the players that rebounding would be vital to beating Minnesota. As far as numbers go, he was right. Sunday's game was the first time the Hoosiers have outrebounded their opponent in conference play.

Left the press room after 10 p.m. and don't plan on posting anything else until tomorrow, but I wanted to post the following quote before the end of the night: I was just feeling it.

Hoosiers beat Michigan in final minute, 62-60

The IU women's basketball team survived a late surge by Michigan to claim a 62-60 victory in the waning moments of Thursday's game at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers (10-7, 3-3) overcame a significant drop in field goal percentage from the first half to the second and were beneficiaries at the final buzzer when the Wolverines (10-7, 2-5) missed an open layup that would have sent the contest to overtime. Junior forward Hope Elam had arguably her best game as a Hoosier, leading the team with 24 points and a season-high 1o rebounds.

Gregory Echenique decides on Creighton for transfer

According to TheBluejayCafe.com, Gregory Echenique, a top-50 recruit coming out of high school and former power forward from Rutgers, who recently granted him release from his scholarship, has decided on one of his top-five schools. Unfortunately for Hoosier fans, that school was Creighton. The 6-foot-nine-inch Echenique was marked as an IU target following his release.

IU guard production with and without Creek

Since Michigan was the first game in which IU played without freshman guard Maurice Creek, we decided it might be time to do an update on how IU guards have fared since Creek's 16.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists left the lineup because of his season-ending knee injury. With the exception of Jeremiah Rivers, who benefitted from how Creek's shooting ability spread the floor and opened driving lanes, IU guards have all increased their numbers.

Foul play: What was at the root of the IU-Illinois discrepancy?

Everyone is talking about it, so I decided to lay the stats out here on Hoosier Hype. It was obvious that the free-throw line had an effect on IU's 66-60 loss to Illinois, whether the foul discrepancy was based on bad officiating or IU's inability to sneak its fouls past the referees. To avoid any more lead-in, here are the numbers.

Langer takes over leadership role for IU

Sophomore Jeremy Langer hasn't yet been forced into a leadership role for the IU Men's Tennis team. Senior Lachlan Ferguson has been through it all on the tennis court and he has been the unquestioned leader of the Hoosiers for the last several years. Ferguson is also the Hoosiers' top player, so he always competes against the best players from the opposing team(s). But with Ferguson (undisclosed illness) and junior Santiago Gruter (Pneumonia) out for the UNLV Invitational this weekend, Langer had to fill the leadership vacancy. He responded very well. Langer went 2-1 in singles play on the weekend, defeating No.
